Earle Bowden's editorial cartoons from his 45-year tenure at the Pensa-cola News Journal. 31. It comes from the more than 4,000 illustrations he donated to the university's John C. Pace Library. Jesse Earle Bowden was born and raised in Altha. A self-taught illustrator, he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Florida State University in 1951, cutting his teeth at the school's the Florida Flambeau and the Panama City News-Herald.

During his time in the service, he helped launch a newspaper at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho. Back in civilian life, he joined the Pensa-cola News Journal in 1953 as a sports writer and illustrator, and ascended the rungs to Editor-in-Chief in 1966. He still drew his own editorial cartoons, which was unheard of as a news The show is a concentration of recent history ranging from the Bay of Pigs to the contested 2000 Presidential election. Bowden's early work is the satirical style unique to editorial cartoonists, with its dependence on immediate caricature and emotion, a style that dates back to the 18th century. Later in his career, Bowden's work becomes more streamlined, but he never abandoned the genre's visceral punch.
