THE SALINA JOURNAL Almanac TUESDAY, JUNE 2, 1998 B7 JOYCE JILLSON Creators Syndicate ., Inc. HOROSCOPES • ARIES (March 21-April 19). Meet creative, business challenges head on, and rocket to the top. An important step is easier when taken with a close friend. Acknowledge the details, and you are more interesting to others. » TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Self- improvement journeys are favored. Take time to tell loved ones how dear they are. Romantic partners are easily persuaded, but your winning smile helps, too. A boss fulfills expectations. • GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Your charm intensifies when you meet someone who is creatively stimulating. A former love interest asks a favor. Rescue a family member if you can. Allow partners plenty of space. • CANCER (June 22-July 22). You are true to your original mission, which is why you find success so easily. Expect last-minute cancellations, and handle them with grace. Discuss a financial proposal. •LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). In business, a quick "no" is the second best answer! Thorough research pays off. Appearances are misleading in love and friendship. Avoid spending money on a whim. Instead, save money by pooling resources. • TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (June 2). By midyear, it will be hard to remember what it felt like in your last cycle, which involved a harder time for money matters and the struggle to pay the bills. The new cycle you're entering is about financial freedom and matters related to growth. Your best signs for love are Pisces and Leo now. Your lucky numbers are 45, 46, 50, 51 and 54. • VIRGO (Aug. 23- Sept. 22). An endeavor begun now has far-reaching effects. An unknown factor is most influential. A meeting where nothing seems to get accomplished might really solve more problems than are readily apparent. •LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Give a promising student or employee the chance to demonstrate his-or her aptitude. A commonplace meeting could result in an outstanding relationship. A Scorpio wants commitment. • SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Obstacles to success exist only in your mind. Slow and steady might not win the race, but it could prevent an ulcer. Be the first to establish a friendly contact with someone extremely intimidating or wildly attractive. • SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). A professional relationship could develop into love. People in your work environment look to you for solutions to various difficulties. Modernizing or decorating your work space helps concentration. • CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Respond to requests as if they were your own. Be prepared for surprises if you spend the evening with a Sagittarius. A partner demonstrates rather than explains a complaint. • AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). A family matter takes time and attention. Getting chore- level work done in the morning can free the afternoon and evening for more creative endeavors. Your sense of humor plays a major role tonight. • PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Quarrelsome people listen to reason from someone who is not involved. Follow your intuition when deciding between two possible contracts. A bearded Alexander attended his wife's first solo art show Saturday night at the Outside the Lines gallery, which is owned by a friend. About 350 people came ', to see Daena Title's exhibit of pastel nudes, but > only two asked Alexan- • der for his autograph. '. "Nicely, most people have been asking about her," said Alexander, who wrapped up his role as George Costanza on "Seinfeld" last month. Still, some stargazers said they were drawn to the show because of Alexander. "Having seen his character on TV, I didn't expect him to be so articulate about her work," Jennifer White of Columbia, Tenn., told The Tennessean. "On TV, he's „ just George." He's a picky eater, that Jerry SYDNEY, Australia — The array of snacks Jerry Seinfeld reportedly requires backstage is idiosyncratic enough to inspire a "Seinfeld" episode. •-"• The superstar comedian is scheduled to t do eight live shows in Australia this ; month, but only if he gets certain foods, according to The Daily Telegraph. The paper quotes an unnamed promoter as saying Seinfeld's "essential backstage items" include: 18 small bottles of water on ice (any brand except Evian is fine), one bag of Rold Gold pretzels, one.; vegetable tray for four people, one small jar of mayonnaise, and a small amount of pasta salad — hold the mayonnaise. "By superstar standards, it's not that demanding a list," the promoter told the Telegraph. From Wire Service Reports T ADVICE Annoying in-laws persist in unannounced visits Dear Ann Landers: My husband and I have been married for three years. From the first week of our marriage, we have been hiding from my husband's father and stepmother. We have told them repeatedly that they must call before stopping by, but it does no good. If they telephone and get our answering machine, they just drive over and bang on the door. They irritate our dog with the constant knocking, and he goes crazy and tears up the miniblinds and the furniture. Sometimes, they call v us from their cellular phone while sitting in our driveway. Then, of course, we are trapped. This happens almost every weekend, and I am at the end of my rope. My hus- ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. band and I have gotten into fights over this. My parents would never be so rude as to keep intruding in our lives, and I don't understand why his folks don't have the common sense to respect our privacy. If you have any suggestions, Ann, I would value them. P.S.: We have thought about moving, but we cannot afford to at this time. Please help us. — Des Moines Dear Des Moines: I have been telling my readers for years that nobody can take advantage of you without your permission. By allowing your in-laws to come over unexpected and uninvited, you have established a precedent that is extremely difficult to break. You and your husband must replace the macaroni in your spines with some steel and lay down the law to the intruders. Get in the car and leave when they arrive unexpectedly. Do not let them into the house. If you are unable to muster the gumption to do this, you are destined to be at the mercy of the in-laws for a very long time. TV TONIGHT Dear Ann Landers: I have been married for 14 years to a very bright, hardworking lady with a full-time job. Alice and I have no children at home. My biggest problem is that we live in a pigsty. Alice works part time for a cat rescue organization, and at any given moment, we have at least 50 stray cats roaming all over the house. Every room has litter boxes, but it is common for these animals to defecate anywhere they choose. The damage from these cats is beyond belief. They have scratched the window sills, chewed the moldings, destroyed our fine oak floors, torn our clothes and ruined our furniture and appliances. In short, they wreck everything they can get at. My wife often stays up until 2 a.m. cleaning, but she never can catch up because of the amount of filth. I am 61 years old, and my wife is 10 years younger. I do love her, but these cats are making my life hell. Any suggestions? — No Name, No City Dear N.N.N.C.: Give Alice two weeks to clear out the house, and if she doesn't, call the Board of Health. I am not kidding. Your wife will no doubt be upset, but your home is a health hazard, and you need the authorities to step in. I'm sure she knows exactly how you feel about her stray cats, but it doesn't seem to matter, so get moving. Dear Ann Landers: I am a widower who is thinking of settling down again. Could you find out which of these second marriages would have the most chance of success for someone over 70? 1. A divorcee with two grown children; 2. A widow my age who had a happy marriage. 3. A very attractive, but much youngeri single lady. Thanks, Ann. I need help right away. — Hesitant in Texas Dear Hesitant: It's unanimous. I polled my office, and the widow wins; hands down.
