New Shirt Jacket -Junior Editors'Quiz on THE FIREFLY LAST THREE TAIL SEGMENTS LIGHT UP — QUESTION: Why does a firefly light? * * * ANSWER: The firefly is not actually a fly but is a winged beetle. Its flashing light can be seen on warm summer nights over meadows, lawns, marshes and along lakes and streams. •The male and female use the flashing to locate each other in the night. The male signals as it; flies about. When the female sees this signal, she responds with a flash slightly weaker than that of the male. The flashes can be seen from a great distance. At times, the flashing is synchronized and thousands of individuals light up at the same time. To produce the light, a generous supply of oxygen and tw.o chemicals-luciferin and luciferase- are needed. These chemicals are made in the luminous organ located in the end segments of the insect's body. The chemical substance luciferin combines with oxygen in the presence of luciferase, an enzyme which cause the reaction. The oxidation produces an excited form of luciferin. When the luciferin returns to normal, the chemical change produces light. The firefly has control over the light- prbducing organ and the chemical process. (Willian Comenat of Great Lakes, Illinois, wins a prize for this question. You can win $10 cash plus AP's handsome World Yearbook if your question, mailed on a postcard to Junior Editors in care of this newspaper, is selected for a prize.)
