The Salina Journal Thursday, 1991 13 Briefly Goodland's Berringer picks NU Heart ailment killed basketball player WICHITA A heart problem apparently killed a high school sophomore who collapsed at mid-court before horrified students and parents, a forensic pathologist said Wednesday. An emergency medical technician immediately began resuscitation efforts, but was unable to revive 15-year-old Travis Sheeley. Witnesses said he sneeley had played about 10 minutes of the junior varsity game involving Northern Valley High School when he appeared to suffer a seizure while running during the second quarter. He stumbled and fell, unconscious. "We lost his pulse and respiration about two minutes after the seizure started," said Marty Ringgold, the paramedic who went to Sheeley's side.

The pathologist, Dr. William Eckert, said autopsy results revealed Sheeley had an enlarged heart. Sheeley was about 6-f oot-2 and weighed around 180 pounds. He appeared generally healthy and the heart condition apparently went undetected until it killed him, Eckert Principal Steve Mollach said Sheeley played both junior varsity and varsity basketball. "Travis was an honor roll student and an outstanding athlete, too," Mollach said.

Richards named to Eight-Man All-Stars Ell-Saline's Doyle Richards has been one of 48 Kansas high school senior football players chosen to play in the 1991 Eight-Man All-Star Football Game on July 20 in Beloit. Richards, a back, will play for the North squad. He is one of 17 players from north-central and northwest Kansas who were selected by a panel of coaches. The North squad will also feature two players apiece from last season's Division I final two teams: Northern Valley and Centre. Keith Sides and Brad Cox will represent Northern Valley, while Jeff Kahns and Allen Beneke will represent Centre.

Don Melby of Pike Valley will be the head of the North, while Ashland's Larry Rich will head the South. Complete team rosters on in today's Scoreboard. KU, now 4-5 in conference play and 13-8 overall, led 35-28 at halftime, but struggled offensively in the second half. City wrestlers dual tonight at South The Salina South and Salina Central wrestling squads meet in the annual city dual tonight at the Sauna South gym. Junior varsity matches will begin at 6:30 p.m. with varsity matches immediately following. The Cougars are 9-2 in dual matches this season and have not been beaten in a dual since early January.

South has clinched at least a tie for second place in the 1-70 League standings, and would finish second outright with a victory over Central. The Mustangs come in with a 5-7 mark, but have won four of their last five duals. Central's recent success has been bouyed by the addition of juniors Bobby Garver and Travis Olson last month. Jayhawks announce Miami-less schedule University of Kansas, which lost 34-0 and got into a pre-game fight with its opponents when it played football at Miami last year, won't have to host the Hurricane this season. Kansas Athletic Director Bob Frederick said Wednesday that the two schools had mutually agreed to drop the second year of a home-and- home contract.

The development not only keeps Kansas from having to meet one of college football's traditional Hurricane finished third in the final AP poll this past also will save it some money. To replace Miami on its schedule, the Jayhawks have added a game at Toledo on the night of Sept. 7, the season opener for both schools. Toledo, a member of the Mid- America Conference, shared the football championship last year. Kansas will host Tulsa on Sept.

Ottawa women rally past Lady Coyotes Kansas Wesleyan's Lady Coyotes let slip away a 14-point halftime lead as the Ottawa Lady Braves came from behind to post an 80-72 Kansas Conference victory at Muir Gymnasium Wednesday night. Wesleyan led 39-25 at halftime before Ottawa chipped away at the lead for the entire second half, finally overcoming the Lady Coyotes and taking the lead for good 69-68, with only 3:49 left to play. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Lady Braves, now 119 overall and 6-7 in KCAC play. The loss dipped Wesleyan to 2-18 and 2-11.

The Lady Coyotes were paced by Brandi Annanders and Tara Higgins each with 21 points and Jennifer Muirhead added 16 points and 13 rebounds. Muirhead fouled out with 7:06 to play (leaving the Lady Coyotes with only five players to finish the ball- game) and Wesleyan clinging to a two-point lead, 61-59. Her absence on the inside enabled the Braves to hammer away at the interior behind Jody Turney who finished with 18 points for the Lady Braves. Berringer, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound quarterback, signed a letter of intent with the school before 150 well- wishers at the Goodland High School cafeteria.

Berringer said he was relieved the recruiting process was complete. "It's good to get it all figured out, to know where I'm going," Berringer said. "Now I can finish my basketball season." The Cornhuskers first saw Berringer at last summer's Big Red Football School. Nebraska receivers coach Ron Brown was in Goodland for the signing, but waited across the street in accordance with NCAA rules prohibiting coaches from attending signings. "We put a lot of pressure on (recruiting) quarterbacks and we could see the kind of skills that he had," Brown said.

"It wasn't a total picture, but we got enough information from (football camp) and his character (to know) he was a guy we wanted to recruit." Brown said Nebraska's recruiting class included three players who could play quarterback, but one of those may end up at another position. Berringer was recruited by several NCAA Division I schools, including Kansas and Kansas State, but, he said, "Nebraska speaks for itself." Berringer cited the NU coaching staff as one of the main reasons for his selection. "They were just great people; the tradition, the stability, all attracted me," he said. Goodland football coach Mike Johnson initially encouraged Berringer to attend the Nebraska football camp. "I always though that with his size and speed (4.7 in the 40-meter dash), he could play at a major college," Johnson said.

Johnson said he was proud, but cautioned that signing was "only the beginning. He's got talent, drive and desire. It's up to how hard he works and what he makes of it." Berringer said this was a day he's been working toward for a long time. "It's the fulfillment of a dream," he said. "At halftime we talked about how we needed to get back to doing the things that make us that is hustling, getting on the floor after the ball and executing on both ends of the floor." The Braves' play had to please Carrier who used to hand out headaches to Wesleyan as a player for Bethany College in the late 1970s as Ottawa played the role of the hungry, scrapping, opportunists and simply ran the Coyotes off of their home floor.

The Jayhawks, however, had very little luck in the first half against King who scored 19 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field. "Rich King kicked us pretty badly in the firsthalf Williams said. With King scoring at will inside, Nebraska built a 31-24 lead with 5:40 remaining in the first half. But the Jayhawks came right back with 10 straight points in just 83 seconds as Terry Brown bombed in a 3-pointer from the right wing, Woodberry hit a pair of free throws and a 3- pointer and Scott dropped in a layup. The 10-0 run gave the Jayhawks a three-point lead (34-31) a lead they never relinquished.

A pair of free throws by Wagner and a layup by David Johanning two more KU reserves gave the Jayhawks a 45-39 lead at halftime. Williams, however, wasn't happy with the way his team had played defense in the first 20 minutes. "I was frustrated with the way we Williams said. Randall, meanwhile, kept away from his third foul in the first half and it paid dividends later on. The 6-9 senior scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the final 20 minutes.

Nebraska, which fell to 4-3 in the Big Eight and 18-4 overall, was still within one point (56-55) with minutes remaining, but Scott led a 14-4 run in the next five minutes. The freshman from Little Rock, started things off with a six- footer in the lane, a layup and two free throws. A driving layup by Alonzo Jamison and two buckets by Randall were capped off by two more free throws from Scott as KU built a 70-59 lead with 8:25 remaining. The lead grew to 14 points (77-63) with 5:43 remaining and Nebraska was never closer than seven points after that although KU had trouble putting the Cornhuskers away because of 6 of 12 free throw shooting in the final two minutes. Brown joined Randall and Scott in double figures with 14 points as the 62 senior popped in three straight 3- pointers in the first half to help stave off King's effort.

King finished with 25 points, while Eric Piatkowski and Tony Farmer added 15 and 12, respectively. "We hung in there and never gave up," Nee said. "I thought our poise was all right considering this is such a tough place to play." Kansas and Oklahoma State, now tied for the Big Eight lead, will square off at 3 p.m. Saturday in Lawrence. Nebraska is at home against Colorado.
