Page Eight HOPE (ARK.) STAR Friday. October 25, 1974 Dr. Lamb Questions about hysterectomies Television Logs Friday By Lawrence K. Lamb, M.I). DEAR DR. LAMB - There arc some general questions that we women have about hysterectomies that doctors just don't tj'ke lime lo answer Could vou please help'.' After surgery do you have an opening into (he lower regions of your abdomen'.' Could germs or V.J). infect your bladder or intestines'.' Are Pap tests necessary only if you still have ovaries'.' Twenty years ago did they leave the cervix after this surgery? Does the pituitary gland si ill regulate your body to have a lime of the month or did the ovaries regulate thai? Is il possible lo have headaches for live consecutive days each monlb alter surgery? Should a woman ,'!8 years old lake estrogen alter a lotal hysterectomy nr avoid it because of dangerous side effects? DEAR KKADKH - It is such a common operation that il is always surprising how much misinformation is available on this subject. First, Ihe birth canal and uterus are like a carpenter's square or like the capital letter L. The long birth canal is about at right angles to the uterus, which sets upward like an upturned vase. When the surgeon removes il the cut edges are sutured together and (he area heals like any other incision. This closes off the abdominal cavity entirely from the birth canal. You have (he same opportunity to get V.I), after a hysterectomy as before, since many of these diseases are transmitted through the moist lining of the birth canal. Bui you are certainly no more likely to have a problem and you certainly don't have an opening into the abdomen that could transmit disease. Pap tests for the female examination are mostly for cancer of the cervix. Cancer WIN AT BRIDGE of the vagina is so rare that most doctors don'l feel Pap tests are necessary for this. The usual Pap test does not delect cancer of the uterus (body of the womb) or of the ovaries. A regular checkup is still advisable for detection of cancer of the breast or the development of other problems. You can't tell without an examination, or from the doctor's statement, whether the cervix has been removed with the uterus or not. It is generally done now. H was less often removed 20 years ago. The ovaries may be left in, if they are normal, at Ihe time the uterus and cervix are removed. That makes a big difference in the response in younger women who have n o'l gone through t h e menopause. If normal ovaries remain, the normal cycle! response will continue to occur, except there will not he a uterus Io c a use menstruation. The cycle rhythm is controlled by the brain. It affects the pituitary gland under the brain, which in turn affects the ovaries. The ovaries then increase and decrease the amounts of female hormones to produce the cycle. You need normal response of the ovaries to maintain a regular cycle. Then if you have a uterus it responds to these stimulations by local changes and eventually menstruation. The adrenal glands also produce estrogen. A test like Ihe Pap tesl is done lo see if a woman has enough female hormone. If she is too low then most doctors would agree that a young woman should have some hormone replacement. Send your questions to Dr. Lamb, in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Station, New York, N.Y. 10019. South's three notrump call was really optimistic. There just wasn't any suit available to bring in nine tricks. In any event he bid it and West opened the three of spades. East rose with the ace and led the suit back. West won with the jack and led a third spade which South took. (AP) — A trusty guard at Cummins Prison Farm escaped sometime after 3 a.m. today bui. was captured a short while later and shot in the leg during an exchange of gunfire with prison officers, a prison spokesman said. Tim Baltz, public information officer for the Correction Department, identified the prisoner as Paul Birmingham, 35, who is serving 16 years for armed robber}'. Baltz said Birmingham was in the northwest tower at the 3 a.m. check, but not at 3:30 a.m.. Birmingham was armed with a 30-06 rifle and 10 rounds of ammunition, Baltz said. A search immediately got under way, and bloodhounds tracked the escapee to an area not far from the tower. Baltz said authorities then tracked Birmingham to an area near U.S. 65 and the entrance to the farm. Birmingham shot one of the dogs, then opened fire or. the officers. Baltz said. Several of ihe officers then returned the fire, and Birmingham was struck in the right leg near the knee. Baliz said.
