Early Edition THE' COURIER-JOURNAL LOUISVILLE. KY. SATURDAY MORNING, APRIL 21, 1971 B.I. Honored with Bryant, McClendon Blanda squeezes homecoming at UK into busy schedule 1940s, since he quit kicking weekly last-second field goals to win games for the Raiders last season. be losing every Saturday and he'd be winning every Sunday, so 1 finally sent George a one-word telegram, noted Bryant in his banquet speech,) Subsequently Blanda, who also saved another game or two with his back-up work as a passer, was named athlete of the year for 1970, and with that went the usual food-and-drink tour.

Asked if he jumped on the banquet circuit with both feet, Blanda said: "I've been everywhere. There's been no rest." Of more importance, though, is his future. To a question about when he and Paul Bryant, came home to the University of Kentucky Thursday. Blanda and McClendon were there to be honored by the K-Men's Association, a school booster group made up of former letter-winning athletes. Bryant, their ex-coach, was here to pay them homage.

For Blanda, the 43-year-old placckick-ing marvel of the Oakland Raiders, and for McClendon, the highly likeable and successful head coach at Louisiana State, it was a nice respite from the daily grind, even if later the hand would be a bit sore and the back would tingle a little from the down-home greetings. The pace has been maddening for Blanda, the UK quarterback of the late By JIM TERIIUNE Courier-Journal ft Timet Staff Writer LEXINGTON The boy stood a couple of yards away, hesitating. The mother looked down at her son, then up at the man, hoping to catch his eye. The man, listening casually to a friend offering to give him a lift to tomorrow morning's golf game, glanced down once, twice. The second time, he caught the mother's eye, and she said: "Go ahead, Tommy, go ahead.

Shake his hand." George Blanda got the message; "Hi, how ya doin'? Uh, Tommy, is it? I'm George Blanda. Hey, sure, Tommy. Talked to you three, four weeks ago." The hoy, nine maybe 10, took the man's Conner joins Flynn, signs grant with UK building one of the nation's best defenses, although he concedes his offense should be more dangerous than last year. Again, however, he will do or die with numbers, including his usual set of alternating quarterbacks. "I believe in playing 50 people" he said.

"Another coach may believe in playing 35. Maybe I don't have that many more of top quality, but you should' see what it does to our kids' morale." Chargers get two tackles in swap for draft choices SAN DIEGO (AP) The San-Diego Chargers acquired two defensive tackles yesterday from the Minnesota Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons in return for future draft choices in the National Football League. The two are Bill Sabatino, 6-foot3, 245-pound, four-year veteran from West Covina, and the University of Colorado, and rookie Rich Stepanek, 6-6, 244, inactive last season after being drafted No. 13 by the Falcons. Sabatino was drafted in 1967 by the Cleveland Browns, playing later for Atlanta before being picked up by 'Minnesota on waivers this year. Associated Press Happy days TIM FOLI.

The boy stared, unable to speak. Blanda, grinning widely, dismissed his admirer's tied tongue and gripped his shoulder. "Are you gonna be better than your daddy? As good as your daddy? Ha.

You'd better be better." The boy managed to break his awe with a tight smile and Blanda, excusing himself with the usual parting amenities, ambled off in search of another old buddy. The boy's father was obviously someone George knew, but then this is the way it is when you come home. Never enough time. Blanda, along with Charlie McClendon Conner's greatness," said UK head coach Adolph Rupp. "We are now in a position to have possibly the best freshman team in the school's history next season." Conner averaged 24.7 points and 14 rebounds while sparking Anderson County to a 30-3 won-lost record and second place in the 1971 State Tournament.

He is the third straight "captain" (or leading vote-getter) on The Courier-Journal's All-State team to sign with UK. Conner, a two-time first-team All-Stater, follows past All-State captains 7-2 Tom Payne of Shawnee (1969) and 5-10 Ronnie Lyons of Mason County (1970) to UK. "UK has a fine program and I want to be a part of it," Conner said. "I've lived in Kentucky all my life and I plan to keep living here. I'd be foolish to go to school out of state." Conner said he had narrowed his choice to UK, North Carolina, Duke and Florida before making his decision.

McClendon's future is more predictable. He will return to LSU this weekend where his team is in the midst of spring drills, and where he is trying to batten down the hatches on a defense that gave him the Southeastern Conference championship and the NCAA coaches' vote as their best field marshal of 1970. McClendon played under Bryant in 1949-50 and then, after years of frustration as a coach, has beaten the Bear's Alabama club the last two seasons.

"Two years ago," said Bryant Thursday night, "we lost to LSU for the first time, 15-20 or something. We weren't nearly as good as they were, but we got some breaks near the end and almost pulled it out. Charlie came up to me afterwards and said, 'If you had lucked this one out again, well Actually, I can't tell you exactly what he said." Redshirt Turns White In a private suite shortly before the banquet, McClendon reflected on 1970. In pre-season he lost a quarterback, Butch Duhe, who died suddenly of a blood clot in the brain. In the first half of the first game, he lost All-Amcrican Tommy Casanova to a shoulder injury and three defensive backs.

He lost that opener, to Texas on a fluke 90-some yard pass completion as time ran out. "This was how bad it was at halftime of that game," said Cholly Mac. "I paged a boy in the stands, a boy we were going to redshirt, to come down and get dressed, His face was white as a sheet. "We played our first five games at home, and even though we started to win, our fans thought we weren't winning easily enough. Our first road game was at Auburn Auburn, of all places but I was as glad to get out of Baton Rouge as the fans were to see me go.

"Somehow we went on and accomplished most of our goals. That's what I'm proudest of, the way we fought back some very tragic and disillusioning things." Now McClendon has the task of re- in the air.
