9) T1IK COliRlEK-JOURNAL, LOUISVILLE. KY ATUKDAY MORNING. APRIL 21, 1971 Parts Service Sales a i 1 speedster lias lost only once Soph Burnett sparkles for Jeff High 's track team SUTTON VOLKSWAGEN 406 f. Highway 131 AulhoriieJ Phone 282-7714 Jeff's 880 relay team, which holds the school record of 1:34.3. lie and Tom Hill are the school's leading long jumpers with a lop leap of 20 feet, 10 inches.

He doesn't like the long jump but does it because "the coach asked me to." In the 100, Barnett has been beaten once this season by Baron Hill of Seymour by two strides. His best time in the 100 is :10.2, which he has done four times, including the Franklin and New Albany Relays. His best time in the 220 came at Clarksville, :22.5 in a dual meet. Marvin Allen holds the school record By WALLACE BLAIR Courier-Journal Correspondent Bill Barnett, a quiet, soft-spoken individual who is only a sophomore, is bidding to become Jeffersonville High School's most outstanding track athlete since Steve Porter won state championship in the high hurdles (out years ago. Unlike Porter, who will be playing his third year of varsity football at Indiana University this fall, Barnett is small.

The little speedster is five feet, eight inches tall and weighs 142 pounds. Barnett runs the 100, 220 and anchors in the 100 of 10 flat set in 1959 and also holds the 220 school record with :22.2 the same year. Barnett was named Jeff High's "Outstanding Track Athlete" by his teammates last year as a freshman. He scored a total of 110 points last season. He has already scored 151 points this year.

Coach Will Cheesman and his assistant, Mike Ehringcr, agree that what makes Barnett great is his attitude, plus his natural ability. Barnett has been running since he was a student at Spring Hill school in the fiftli grade. He lives only a square from the new Spring Hill school and goes daily to run on the school grounds with the exception of the days when he has a meet. Cheesman thinks Barnett will set new school records before the season is over in both events. The coach thinks when he learns to get off the blocks he'll get down to 10 flat in the 100.

Ehringer and Cheesman explained how they check their runners for condition in practice. Ehringer, a distance runner at Providence High School and Franklin College, is in charge of the distance men at Jeff High. When a boy runs a mile or two-mile in practice, they immediately check his heart beat. If it is 180 and if it drops back to 120 in 30 seconds, the boy is in condition, Ehringcr explained. Cheesman and Ehringer have built new enthusiasm in track at Jeff High.

Next season at the new high school located on State Road 62 and Allison Lane, a new composition track with a 220 straightaway will be ready for use. Cheesman said yesterday he expects more than 100 boys to report next season. Barnett is one of seven children of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Barnett, who moved to Jeffersonville from Bowling Green, 14 years ago.

He has a brother and sister younger than he. None of the family has participated in sports. GABE'S More fln your Valuables 800 S. PRESTON (AT COLLEGE ST.) Samuels Distillery Deatsville, NELSON COUNTY, Kentucky Veteran Barbara Mclntire stunned teenager Mollis Stacy with a five-hole sweep starting at the second hole and won her sixth North and South Amateur golf championship, 6 and 5. Villanova won an unprecedented sixth straight Penn Relays distance medley in 9:44.1. The University of Kentucky's 440-yard relay team had the top qualifying time, :40.9.

UK's Jim Green topped 100-yard dash qualifiers in :09.5, Dick Conley was second in the discus throw finals and Bill Lightsey was third in the long jump, In the Drake Relays, four records were broken, led by three-miler Frank Snorter's 13:07, six seconds off the previous mark. Virginia Tech named as its new head basketball coach Don DeVoe, an assistant at Ohio State. DeVoe signed a three-year contract to succeed Howie Shannon, who resigned March 30. Al Denson, No. 7 all-time American Football Conference pass receiver, was acquired by the Minnesota Vikings from Denver for defensive back John Charles and a high 1972 draft choice.

Minnesota also sent defensive tackle Rich Stepanek to San Diego for an undisclosed 1972 draft choice. Walter Chadwick, 25, leading rusher on Tennessee's 1967 Orange Bowl football team and now a Smyrna, high school coach, was critically injured yesterday in a car-truck collision in Atlanta. His mother said hospital officials told her Chadwick "has suffered extensive brain damage and needs blood badly." Chadwick's brother, Dennis, is expected to quarterback Tennessee next fall. BLUE GRASS LINCOLN MERCURY GDGANTDC Smith leads N. North Harrison finished with 87 points to 69 for defending champion Perry Central. Smith won the high hurdles, the low hurdles and was a member of North Harrison's winning 880 relay team. 3 3 Rich Davis, who has been pitching in the shadows of Rich Romans at Jeffersonville this year, made the spotlight yesterday by hurling Jeff to a 7-1 victory over visiting Manual. Davis, who won 12 games last year and is now 4-0 this season, stopped Manual on just two hits. He struck out 11 and walked only three as Jeff ran its record to 9-1. The only oss came at the hands of Providence on Thursday. Mike Rainbolt sparked the big tird inning with two singles for Providence while Bill Hoyland added a triple and Pete Corrao a double.

Gary McCartin, who pitched the first three innings, registered the win while Billy Schuler took the loss.
