Warren, who plays a woman obsessed with abstract art sculptures, Is shown with Peter Welter, a detective on the trail of a killer. Dark detective tales are big on TV lately and HBO adds to the bloody lot at 9 EDT tonight with "Apology" starring Lesley Ann Warren. She plays Lily McGuire, a woman whose whole life is wrapped up In abstract art sculptures In which spectators participate. As the movie opens we see her putting up posters around New York City for Apology. Apology is her self-designed answering service where people can call in and "let others know what you've done wrong and how you feel about it without giving your name." It's kind of a dial-a-confession In reverse.

Lily plans to use the admissions as part of a modern confessional art project If it sounds a little weird and confusing, it figures. The movie is a bit strange and hard to get a grasp on. it out with a teen-ager. If you think this is a murderous mess, just wait Hungate and Lily finally cross paths when he finds out about her answering service. He wants her tapes.

She isn't handing them over. If he cant have the evidence, he'll take her. She's too wrapped up In her art to find time for fooling around. He persists. She resists.

The killer closes In and she decides to confront him face to face. Of course that's so the brave cool cop can res Some of the calls are from cranks. Others Include one from a teen-age girl who wants to be absolved for "getting on mom's case last night" Then there's Claude, who confesses to "beating up homosexuals." "I hate 'em. They're the scum of the Earth. I kill them," Claude chuckles.

He's stabbed and beaten five to death so far. Detective Rad Hungate (Peter Weller) Is trying to stop him before he makes it six. Hungate harbors his own guilt about killing since he shot body Is much Involved with anybody else, which further weakens the story. It's good enough to hook you, though. Once you start watching you stick with It to find out what's going to happen.

There's lots of gore and a contrived climax that looks like It should be tacked onto the ending of "Halloween II." It's more likely to appeal to fans of that kind of movie than people looking for a classy mystery. cue the damsel In dire distress. There are cases of mistaken Identity, but the real psycho has nine lives. Well, at least three or four as he comes back to life again and again to stalk the not-so-helpless heroine. The screen Is littered with bodies, and the sound track is sprinkled with obscenities.
