THE COURIER-JOURNAL, SATURDAY, JANUARY 4, 1986 3 arnes scores 28, Iroquois impresses in beating lioss 71-55 1 By BRUCE W. BRANCH Staff Writer Iroquois coach Charlie Moore is fond of saying that offense sells tickets, but defense wins games. Moore may be ready to change his tune after his 6-foot-5 senior center, Tim Barnes, muscled his way inside for a career-high 28 points to lead the Raiders to a 71-55 Sixth Region basketball victory over visiting Doss last night "I'm really not worried about who gets the points," said Moore. "But Barnes works hard, and good things are going to happen to him because he does work hard. "I thought the kids did a good job DOSS 13 10 14 16 -5J IROQUOIS 20 13 14 24 -7) Doss Monks 24, Mudd 12, Davis 2, Hudgins 6, Bigham 3, Sawyers 2, Emberton 2, Cottner 2, Lessor 2.

Iroquois Gales 5, Woods 10, Barnes 28, McClain 1, Bradley 10, HIM 8, Dalley 2. Lamont Woods and Damon Bradley backed Barnes up with 10 points apiece while Aaron Hill and Clarence McClain had eight each. "Without the team, I couldn't have done it," Barnes said. "We were working as a team, and that made a big difference." Barnes said he hopes that the Raiders' triumph over the defending region champions is the start of something good. "We weren't really prepared for the the other games, but we were tonight," he explained.

"I think we are going to turn things around this season and have a winning season." Doss coach Leon Mudd was im- pressed with Iroquois and Barnes. "He (Barnes) did a nice job," said Mudd, who watched his club fall to 5-4. "He got great position, and he put the ball in. He made the difference in the game, plus they had five or six runouts. "Iroquois has a little quickness and plays very well together.

Iroquois is going to beat a lot of people. Right now, I think they are the third best team in the region behind Pleasure Ridge Park and Southern." Although Iroquois had things pretty much its way, Doss had its chances. Doss, which trailed 33-23 at half-time, rallied to cut the deficit to 39- 37 on a basket by 6-6 junior Brandy Monks with 3:20 remaining in the third quarter. Baskets by McClain and Bradley gave Iroquois a 43-37 bulge. Then, with 49 seconds left in the quarter, Mudd was tagged with a technical for protesting a charging call on reserve guard Danny Leasor.

Two free throws by Monks and a subsequent breakaway hoop by Woods gave Iroquois a 47-37 bulge. The Raiders outscored Doss 20-8 to take a commanding 67-47 lead with 2:50 remaining. "We're a very inexperienced club," said Mudd. "We get down and we start doing a lot of silly things. We are just going to have to work hard and try to get better." -Monks, whom Mudd saldt Is playing out of position at center Ted the losers with a career-high.

-24 points. "Actually, Monks is a forward or a guard," said the Doss coach. "He is not a center. He trys to get some boards (rebounds), but he is not a center." Doss' lack of an inside game was reflected in the final statistics. The Dragons garnered only 12 rebounds.

"One player ought to get that," said coach Mudd. "When you stand around flat-footed, you aren't going to get that many." of seeing Tim and looking for one another, especially in the second half. As far as the team concept is concerned, I thought we played as hard as we had all year." Barnes, who scored most of his points on easy shots underneath, led three Iroquois players in double figures as the Raiders evened their record at 4-4 while hitting 53.8 percent of thir field goal attempts. "Coach told us we could take it to them." Daugherty hit 6 of 13 field-goal tries and 7 of 8 free throws in the game, scoring 12 of his points in the second half.

On its way to suffering its first loss in six games, Bardstown committed a horrendous 28 turnovers against Fern Creek's pressure defense. "Sixteen of those came in the second half," said a disappointed Bardstown coach, Tommy Williams. "We tried to stress the importance of the second half and they went on a 10-2 spurt. We were forced to play catch-up the rest of the way." Although Fern Creek only made 14 turnovers, the Seventh Region club shot poorly, hitting just 7 of 29 field-goal tries for 24.1 percent in the first half. For the game, Fern Creek made 18 of 48 attempts for 37.5 percent.

Part of that could be blamed on the two-week layoff during the Christmas holidays. "It gets me out of shape, all that turkey," said Daugherty, who left the game with 2:15 to play after injuring his lower back hitting the floor hard after shooting a layup. "I have to do something every day, at least shoot or run," Daugherty said. Hazard, who scored 12 points and led Fern Creek rebounders with seven, laughed at that remark. "We've been practicing every day, except New Year's Hazard said.

"We played all riev down the stretch, but we rush shots toward the end. We hpvi lot of young players." Sam Liberatore, a t-ioot-4 freshman, was Bardstown's high man with 13 points, nine of them coming in the fourth quarter. Tony Spalding added 10 points coming off the bench. James Brewer, a 6-3 sophomore, scored only nine points, 1 1 under his average. Brewer hit one of 12 shots, but was 7 for 10 at the free-throw line and was the game's leading re-bounder with 15.

"Norton did a nice job keeping the ball away from Liberatore," said Fern Creek coach George Aber-nathy. "And Daugherty did a good job on Brewer." Toby Taylor, a 6-4 junior, had 16 points and six rebounds for Fern Creek. His three-point play on a slam dunk and a free throw with 1:20 left in the game raised Fern Creek's margin to 56-46. Fern Creek was nursing a 42-38 lead when Bardstown guard Kevin Simpson made a careless one-hand- Sophomore guard Kim Pehlke sank 10-of-17 field-goal attempts and scored 23 points as visiting Doss took a 58-49 triumph over Iroquois last night in girls' high school basketball. Doss (5-4) led by 15 points going into the final period, but freshman Deidra Adams scored 12 of her 20 points in the fourth period as Iroquois (1-5) rallied.

Juniors Tracy Price and Sheila Johnson scored 17 and 13 points, respectively, for Doss. Adams also gathered 1 1 rebounds and snatched five steals for Iroquois, while teammate Carolyn Wilson added 14 points and 14 rebounds. Sacred Heart (12-0) remained unbeaten after a 62-37 decision over visiting Holy Cross. Susan Yates led Sacred Heart with 20 points while teammate Dawn Brohman chipped-in 18. Sarah Rowan added 10 points and 12 rebounds in leading Sacred Heart to a 37-27 advantage on the boards.

Jennifer Haywood scored 12 points for Holy Cross. Poor shooting plagued Central in a 41-36 loss to visiting Fairdale. Central (3-4) made only 13 of 51 field goals for 25 percent. The shooting was particularly slow in the third quarter, when Fairdale made 8 of 11 and Central could manage to make just 1 of 15 shots. "We got some good shots.

they were wonderful shots," Central coach Lou Wheeler said. "We missed nine layups alone in the first half." Despite the shooting woes, Central shaved a 14-point deficit to a single digit with one minute remaining. But Fairdale's Stacey Bussey responded with a basket to seal the victory. Nichelle Black paced Fairdale (5-5) with 22 points while Bussey added 10. Central got 12 points from Connie Curry and 10 each from Tonya Chivers and Karen Doyle.

Mercy (5-4) outscored host Nelson County (6-3) by nine points in the third quarter, breaking open a close game en route to a 54-44 victory. Sue Antkowiak led Mercy with. 16 points and Marti Wilkins scored eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter. Jane Stephenson scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds for the winners. Nelson County got 22 points from Missy Hahn and 10 from Sandy Williams.

Holy Rosary shot 24 free throws, converting 15, while Shawnee made just 7 of 14 as visiting Holy Rosary triumphed The Ramblers (5-5) were led by Donna Johnson's 14 points. Ton'hea Cox, a sophomore, paced Shawnee (2-3) with 24 points. Senior guard Tonya poured-in 45 points to spark Madl-sonvllle (9-0) to a 75-41 victory over visiting South Hopkins. Wells, who was averaging "22 points a game, made 22 of 26 field goals, grabbed 20 rebounds and handed-out seven assists. Jamie Hobgood, a sophomore, contributed 11 points.

Wells' scoring outburst set a school record for most points scored in a single game, boys or girls. North Bullitt, leading by three points at halftime, was outscored 30-15 in the second half and lost 51-39 at Bardstown Bethlehem. Tonya White paced Bethlehem with 13 points while Greta Canoe scored 12 and Laura McGuire and Shawn Johnson contributed 10 each. Amy Hall was tops for North Bullitt with 13 points. Sandy Chasteen sank a 10-foot jumper with 54 seconds remaining to lift Beth Haven past visiting Christian Academy 34-33.

Christian Academy (0-6) had a chance to win, but failed on front end of a bonus free throw "at the :02 mark. Junior Anna Curtsinger led Beth Haven (5-5) with 11 points. Fern Creek then threw the ball inbounds and Daugherty scored three seconds later for a five-point trip and a 47-38 cushion with 3:48 to play. With Liberatore hitting 5 of 12 shots and Simpson 2 of 10, Bardstown finished with a 17-for-52 mark for 32.6 percent. Still, it was the turnovers that proved deadly.

Bradley finished with 27 points to lead Hart County (2-4). Bullitt Central (3-6) was led by Kirk Greath-ouse and Jerry Flener, who scored 25 and 24 points, respectively. 'Senior guard Rex Chapman scored 27 points, 10 in the final period, as Apollo held off Breckinridge County 55-54 at Owensboro. Apollo led 30-28 at the half, and behind Chapman pulled out to a 41-34 lead in the third quarter.

At that point. Chapman picked up his fourth foul and didn't re-enter the game until the fourth period. By that time, Breckinridge County had pulled back into the game. Breckinridge County tied the score at 53 when Vincent Mitchell hit a free throw with 30 seconds left. Chapman followed with a basket that gave Apollo a 55-53 lead.

Todd Armes hit one of two free throws to cut the margin to 55-54. Breckinridge County regained possession with :12 left, but Apollo's man-to-man defense forced the visitors to shoot a desperation shot which missed at the buzzer. Keith Survant added 13 points for Apollo (11-2). Breckinridge County (9-1) was led by Mitchell with 17 points and Armes with 16. of what we wanted to do," said Williams.

"You have to credit their defense. They put pressure on us. Most of the people we've played have zoned us. "It seemed we were a step slow and a step behind all night," Williams said. "We didn't react to the situation." Fern Creek made 25 of 36 free throws, compared to 18 of 26 for Bardstown, which lost 6-5 senior Daryl Grundy on fouls with 3:18 to play and Simpson with eight seconds left.

Mike DeVore pumped in eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including a game-winning rebound basket to lead Ninth to a 64-63 win over Portland Christian. With four seconds left, Brian Warren, who led all scorers with 23 points, missed a 15-foot jumper, but DeVore was right there to put the rebound in for the game-winning score. Portland Christian (0-8) had jumped out to a 16-10 lead in the first quarter behind the 10 points of Billy Lefler. Lefler ran into foul trouble and was held to four points the rest of the way. Mike Ferguson scored 12 for Ninth (5-8).

Evangel hit 56 percent from the field to post a 67-56 win over visiting Western Anderson. Evangel (11-4) also made 20 of 28 free-throws attempts. The hosts used a full-court press to break open the tight contest in the third quarter. The press forced seven turnovers. Dewayne Miles paced Evangel with 25 points.

Teammate Eddie Gaddie added 17. Western Anderson (4-8) got 27 points from Doug Brown and 24 from Kevin Goodlett. Shooting also sparked Christian Academy in a 56-34 win at Beth Haven. Christian Academy shot 58 percent from the field while Beth Haven made only 40 percent. Mark Gambrel and Todd Humphrey led Christian Academy (7-1) with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
