The female is larger than the male. The plumage is coarse, hairlike and drooping and colored black. The skin of the head and neck is brightly colored red, blue, purple and yellow. A horney crown sits atop .the head and red tipped wattles hang under the Uiroat. The bird's legs are short, heavy and muscular. The inner toe has a long sharp claw which the bird uses to attack an agressor. If provoked,, the cassowary is capable of killing a man. In general, though, the birds are shy and live in family groups in forests. They are most active at night and eat seeds, berries, fruit, insects and small animals. The bird is a good swimmer and a fast runner, reaching a speed of 30 miles an hour. A casswary couple nests on the forest floor. The female lays three to eight green eggs which the male incubates. The male also cares for the young birds which have stripped plumage to blend with their surroundings. .4-14 (Linda Membrino of Fitchburg; Massachusetts, wins a prize for this question.
