8 THE COURIER-JOURNAL, SUNDAY. SEPTEMBER 8, 1985 COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOP 20 TEAMS Seminoles benefit from opener Trudeau feels the heat as Trojans roll 20-10 6 SOUTHERN CAL vs. 11 ILLINOIS. McManus brought Florida State back with a 15-yard scoring toss to Darrin Holloman, and Derek Schmidt put the Seminoles up 10-7 with a 20-yard field goal early in the second quarter. The Cornhuskers regained the lead on a one-yard run by Doug Du-Bose with 8:05 to play in the half after Florida State had held Nebraska three times at the one.

But the Seminoles grabbed the lead again, 17-13, when Cletis Jones scored the eventual game-winner on a two-yard run with 3:27 left in the second period. That score was set up when Nebraska punter Dan Win-gard tried to run after a bad snap from center and was tackled at the Nebraska six. Nebraska's Dale Klein missed a 31-yard field goal with 10:08 to play, and Paul McGowan intercepted a McCathorn Clayton pass with 3:59 left to snuff two second-half scoring threats. Florida State sophomore quarterback Danny McManus and coach Bobby Bowden credited a game's worth of experience for the difference in a 17-13 victory for the nth-ranked Seminoles over lOth-ranked Nebraska yesterday in a non-conference college football game. Bowden's youthful signal caller had the benefit of game exposure in last week's 38-12 victory over Tu-lane. McManus said the experience helped as he hit 15 of 27 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown against the Cornhuskers, who were playing their season opener. "The fact we have played a game had a very definite impact," Bowden said. "They (Nebraska) couldn't quite put the pieces together, which we learned last week.

If they had played a game and we hadn't, I feel they would have won." riod Illinois turnovers into 17 points, including a pair of touchdown passes by Sean Salisbury, in rolling to its 16th consecutive victory over Big Ten opposition. Southern California coach Ted Tollner gave his halftime pep talk before the game and had exactly the right words.

"I told them, 'Let's find a way to win under these adverse conditions and use it as a Tollner said after sixth-ranked USC forced No. 11 Illinois into six turnovers and beat the Illini 20-10 yesterday in the opener for both teams. Those adverse conditions were steamy 89-degree weather and a partisan Illinois crowd of 76,369. But Southern Cal provided some adverse conditions of its own for Illinois quarterback Jack Trudeau, who threw for 310 yards but suffered four interceptions among his 37 passes. "We forced Trudeau to hold on to the ball by giving them different looks in our pass coverage," Tollner said.

"Our defense confused them. We were hoping we could play a football game where we came out ahead in terms of turnovers. We felt like we had to hit hard to force the turnovers." The Trojans also slammed the door on Illinois' rushing attack, yielding just 10 yards on 21 carries. "Someone once told me that when you want to do your best, sometimes you do your worst," Illinois coach Mike White said. "As well as we wanted to do, we did not do a good job, especially on offense." 17 FLORIDA STATE Nebraska opened its season with only four returning starters. "What we were afraid would happen did happen," coach Tom Osborne said. "Any time you have new or inexperienced players at key positions you're apt to have mistakes, and we did." The Cornhuskers started quickly, but second-half turnovers and Florida State's kicking game kept them off the scoreboard in the second half. Nebraska drew first blood in the nationally televised contest when fullback Tom Rathman darted through the line for a 60-yard touchdown run on the Cornhuskers' first series with just 1:40 gone in the game. 7 MARYLAND vs.

Penn State quickly turned two pass interceptions into a 10-0 lead and extended its margin to 17-0 early in the second quarter. Penn State's Michael Zordich intercepted a Stan Gelbaugh pass on the second play of the game and returned it 32 yards for a 7-0 lead after just 50 seconds. Another interception by Pete Giftopoulos at the Lions' 11 blunted a Maryland drive and led to a 28-yard field goal by Manca late in the first quarter.

I Tight end Danny Smith scofed the go-ahead touchdown on a 67-yard pass play and Kent Hagood scrambled for another touchdown as No. 18 South Carolina slipped past persistent Appalachian State 20-13 at Columbia, S.C. Smith, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, was the favorite target most of the game for quarterbacks Mike Hold and Allen Mitchell, catching five passes for 134 yards.

South Carolina, which opened by pounding The Citadel 56-17 last weekend, found itself behind much of the first half as Appalachian State's John Settle bulled his way for 106 yards en route to a game total of 193. Settle, who frustrated the Gamecocks' defense by breaking tackles all evening, gave the Mountaineers an early lead when he scrambled 13 yards around left end for the game's first points. On Penn State's next possession, a 50-yard pass from John Shaffer to Michael Timpson launched an 80-yard drive which culminated with a two-yard TD pass from Shaffer to Bob Williams and a 17-0 advantage. Maryland, which scored its only series victory in 1961, scored on a 22-yard field goal by Paredes. When Blair Thomas fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Danny Swingle recovered for the Terps on the Penn State 30.

Five plays later, Rick Badanjek scored on an eight-yard run, pulling Maryland within 17-10. An interception by Chuck Faucett led to another Badanjek TD, this one from five yards out, and a two-point pass conversion from holder Dan Henning to Chris Knight put Maryland ahead 18-17. The Nittany Lions came right, back with the final score, Manca booting the longest field goal of his career. quarterback Robbie Bosco with 2:54 remaining in the game. But Stevens, a junior who replaced starter David Norrie, drove UCLA 84 yards in six plays, hooking up with Mike Sherrard for a 62-yard pass play to the BYU 22.

Running back Gaston Green punched the ball over from the two and followed with a two-point conversion run. Bosco, who had completed 29 of 41 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns, was prevented from passing deep downfield by a swarming UCLA secondary and was intercepted twice. BYU, a 28-14 winner in its opening game against Boston College in the Kickoff Classic, suffered five covered a fumble by the Huskies' David Toy in the end zone. The Cowboys' defense, which surrendered a pair of Millen-to-Lonzell Hill touchdown passes in the first half, completely throttled the Washington offense in the second half. Jeff Jaeger of the Huskies missed field goal tries of 30 and 49 yards in the third quarter.

Thomas, who rushed for 843 yards as a freshman, had 158 yards on 27 carries in the opening half. His rushing effort fell short of the Oklahoma State single-game record of 270 yards set by Ernest Anderson against Kansas in 1982. Associated Prass COLLEGE PARK, Md. But Scott Schankweiler, a senior co-captain, indicated he may have been feeling effects of a whammy. "I wasn't sure about anything when we had the ball at the end," he said. "The way things have gone in the past, you can't take anything for granted against Penn State and you saw how it turned out."
