The FCC. when it lifts the freeze, plans also to open up some 40 additional channels at ill higher in the spectrum in the Ultra high frequencies (UHF). Then sandwiched between channels four and five Is a space four niejrarvi'les wide devoted to mobile telephone and other point-to-point radio communications.

Channels 5 and 6 are in order, but there's a hig gap between channel 6, which ends at 88 megacycles, and channel 7, which starts at 174. In this gap i.s all of frequency modulation radio, which runs from 1)2 to 108 megacycles. Other services in the gap include aviation communications and navigation aids, more amateur and mobile telephone channels and a number of government channels. Leaves Big Gap From the lower end of channel 7. and 174 megacycles, to the top of channel at 21fl megacycles, the remainder of the video segment is unbroken.

Dut from the present channel 13 in VHF to the first channel in the proposed ultra high frequencies will he a huge gap to be filled by other nervices. Among them are channels for experimental use lor such purposes as guided missiles and automatic control devices. Electronics scientists have continuously expanded the usable radio spectrum by developing higher and still higher frequencies. But as fast as they add space to the spectrum, there are new demands for so that, there's still a shortage. That's why television, with its huge space requirements, can't simply spill over at the top of its present upper limit-channel 13.
