Female Ministers Gain Acceptance in Iowa Timei Herald, Carroll, la. Tueiday, April 13, 1976 FUNNY BUSINESS Roger Bo/ten By Jan Poulson (Drake University Journalism Student) DBS MOINES — Ordained female ministers in Iowa are not uncommon. An informal survey of several Iowa Protestant churches which allow female ordination showed the following: the United Methodists in Iowa have 10 female ministers: the United Presbyterians have two: the United Church of Christ has five and the American Baptists have three. Elizabeth Barron of Des Moines and Patrice Ramga of Beaverdale are two of Iowa's ordained women ministers. In informal interviews, they talked about women members of the clergy. 4-H News DEDHAM — The Go Getters 4-H Club met Thursday evening, April 8. at the Legion Hall. Cindy Stangl, the president, conducted the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was given by Debbie Tunning. Roll call was on "our ancestors". The 4-H pledge was given by Janet. Carol and Mary Derner. The entertainment was given by Mrs. Gary Hackett of Carroll on "Beginnings of Our Community." Hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Robert Peters. Mrs. Leonard Koester and Mrs.'Lee Englin. Barron is presently interim pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Des Moines. Her interest in the ministry began when she became acquainted with an ordained woman minister while she was still in high school. She said she received no opposition about her choice of career at home or at church. "I never felt I was doing anything weird or different." she said. Barron said female enrollment at divinity schools has risen in the last few years, but finding a job is a problem. She said women ministers usually get jobs in small-town churches where the pay is not outstanding or they work as assistant or institutional ministers. Barron said females have a lot to offer the ministry. She said male ministers are subjected to stereotypes as to how they should act. Women as yet have not been molded into any roles as ministers, she said. "I can be myself." she said. Barron is not concerned with the possibility that a "woman's emotions" might interfere with her job. "There are times when anybody's emotions get in the way of doing a job. Women have an advantage over men because it is socially acceptable for women to touch. There are times when touching will work better than words for comforting." she said. When Ramga applied for the job, the position was open to male or female but, she said, the congregation wasn't expecting a woman to apply. Now that she has the job. little rejection is shown and if any criticism is voiced, she gets it second-hand through the head minister. "I'm a novelty at my church."she said. Ramga said she feels she was called to the ministry. While teaching school in an Indiana city, Ramga said she became aware that many children are being misguided. For example, she said her students lived for the weekend and were preoccupied with sex at a young age. She said someday she hopes, through God. to help children appreciate life day-by-day. Ramga gets a standard response when she is introduced as a minister. "People say. oh. you're in Christian education." she said. Christian education has been the standard role for most women interested in religion. Ramga doesn't identify with the women's movement but. IRS QUESTION — I am trying to decide whether to itemize or use the standard deduction this year. How much is the standard deduction currently? ANSWER - The standard deduction allows you to reduce your adjusted gross income (AGI) when you do not itemize your deductions. If your adjusted gross income is $15.000 or more, the deduction is limited to 16 per cent of your AGI. However, the deduction may not exceed $2.300 for a Settle Bias Case for $1,000 DUBUQUE. Iowa (AP) The Dubuque County Board of Supervisors has agreed to pay $1.000 to settle a discrimination complaint filed aga.inst a former county employe. Edith Alexander, a black woman, charged that she had been discriminated against by the then-director of the Dubuque County Nursing Home when she applied for a job as a nurses aid there early last year. The charge was investigated by the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and the payment was made at the recommendation of the Dubuque County attorney. Lauds Program for Japanese DES MOINES. QUESTION - In August, 1975.1 had to move to another city when I took a new job. I met all the requirements for deducting moving expenses except one: I will not have worked the required 39 weeks before my tax return is due. Can I still claim the moving expense deduction this year? ANSWER — The general requirement is that you must be employed for 39 weeks during the 12 months period immediately following your move. If you have not yet 8 she said, women aren't the only ones who need to be liberated. "Men are bound and they don't even know it," she said. R^a mga and Barron approach their roles with a great deal of enthusiasm and although they don't gee themselves as courageous revolutionists, they have found acceptance in a long male-dominated occupation: satisfied this test by the time your return is due, but expect to do so later in the year, you have a choice of how to claim the deduction. You may claim your moving expense on your 1975 return. If, later, you fail to meet the full-time work test, you must either report as income on your 1976 return the amount you claimed as a deduction in 1975 on file an amended return, Form 1040X, for 1975. Or you may file your 1975 return without claiming your moving expenses. If you later meet the requirements, you can file a Form 1040X S'POSE U)E SHOULD claiming the deduction.
