In a recent test, adults ages 19-48 were suddenly deprived of their usual daily dose, the amount in three cups of coffee. They complained of backache, headache, tension and anxiety. After four days they still weren't normal, said researcher Roy R. Reeves, Ph.D., of Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, Shreveport, La. Withdrawal usually lasts a week, but can last longer. To avoid distress, cut down gradually. More caffeine notes: • Caffeine doesnt cause cancer. There is no evidence that drinking coffee or tea contributes to cancer (with the possible exception of bladder cancer). In fact, drinking tea is thought to deter cancer — tea, especially green tea, has anti-cancer chemicals. • Normal caffeine Intake doesn't disrupt the heart. The caffeine in fewer than five cups of coffee a day won't raise your risk of fatal cardiac arrest, according to a new University of Washington study of 362 such deaths. Olive oil may ease arthritis A new reason to eat olive oil: It's anti-inflammatory, say English researchers. Tests on 30 men showed cells that promote inflammation and allergic reactions were one-fifth less active after a two-month diet high in monounsaturated fats (like olive oil).
