BOYLE NEW YORK (AP) - As every veteran bartender, doctor, lawyer, newspaperman and minister knows, sooner or later almost anything can happen to anybody. Insurance claims adjustors, too, in time become familiar with the quirks of chance and the vagaries of human behavior. One of these, R. J. Bartum, claims vice president of State Farm Mutual and a man with a fine eye for the ridiculous ?.nd the unusual, collects as a hobby some of the odd cases his firm t has been called upon to settle. Here are a few: A Midwestern client summoned police after he smashed into a telephone pole. They immediately arrested him for a drunken driving. Denying the charge, he asked for a drunkometer test. When the drunkometer failed to' work, the man said, "I'm an electronics engineer, I'll fix it." He did, then took the test— and flunked. Michigan tavern, a bunch of Indians on their way back to the reservation attacked a passing pickup trucks with rocks and beer bottles. The driver veered into a telephone pole. He collected, but the insurance company couldn't, it found, collect from the wayward braves. Their tribe had never signed a full peace teraty with the United States: therefore they couldn't be sued. sual feat of colliding with a bathtub. It turned out the bathtub had fallen from a truck on the highway. After whooping it up in a An Illinois man reported he'd just been in a collision with a bathtub. "Yes; sir," replied the unruffled claims agent, and asked how he had managed the unu- Then there was the case of the man who one moment was relaxing chin deep in a warm bath and the next moment found himself, stark naked, sitting on his garage roof. His hot water hesUer had exploded. Part of his house was demolished; he was unscathed. Animals figure in a number of cases: A 78-year -old woman reported that, wHile peacefully watering her lawn, she had been attacked and scratched by a surly rabbit. In Arizona a man collected after he was dive-bombed by a near-sighted desert hawk who snapped the aerial from his moving car and flew off through the sky with it—apparently believing he had caught a snake. After his car had been stolen, a client had to rent: a new one. He retrieved his old car a few days later. The thief crashed into him after running a stop sign. A lady denied vehemently that she had been in an accident or had failed to pay a number of parking fines. Investigation proved ' her right. The guilty party had been driving around with his license plates upside down. His number was 660-898. Hers was 868-099. BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — The driver of a truck loaded with workers ignored a sign at a railroad crossing and crashed with a n oscoming train last Thursday. Sixteen persaAvere killed, including the drivW\ and 12 were injured, the Romanian news agency Agerpress said today. POWER TOOL CLINIC!
