Answer to Previous Puzzle BUGS BUNNY by Stoffel & Heimdahl Civil War QUESTION : Can you tell MS about sand dollars? ANSWER: The sand dollar is a small salt water animal related to the sea urchins and star fish. It lives in the ocean concealed a few feet under the sand. Its round, flattened body measures from 1/2 to 4 inches in diameter and is about 3/8ths of an inch thick at the center. The limy skeleton of fused shell-like plates is covered with skin which gives the live animal its dark color. When the animal dies, the skin peels off leaving the white shell exposed. The arched upper surface is covered by many tiny muscular tube feet or spines which form a dense fur to keep the sand out. Tube feet also cover the breathing or gil pores along the five-petal pattern. The underside of the sand dollar is also covered with tube feet, used to push the animal through the sand. Five grooves radiate from the mouth. Along these grooves, food is collected and sifted to the mouth. To reproduce, the sand dollars release eggs or sperm into the water and by chance encounter the eggs are fertilized. 4-12 (Kelly Green of Charleston, South Carolina, wins a prize for this question.
