For The Family The Self-Service Way Having been born and reared in Deepwater, Mo., Charles Queen first made his debut in Ottawa in 1952. At this time he purchased the Davis Paint Store from Henry Nordeen and operated this store through 1959. Previous to this he had lived in Kansas City, Mo. for several years at which time he was employed as real estate representative for the Davis Paint Co. Mr. Queen served with the 14th Calvary group as master sar- gent from 1943 through 1945. Mr. and Mrs. Queen have two sons, Stephen, 15, a sophomore in Ottawa High School and Tod, 11, 6th grader at Eugene Field. Mrs. Queen (Dottie Jean) is interested and active in many civic activities. She is past-president of the Kiwaniqueens. How and why he bacame inter- ested in the shoe business was a question to which Mr. Queen simply replied "I really don't know, but I can honestly say I like the business very much." He purchased the Self-Service Shoe store here in Ottawa and Lawrence, from Dorsey Riddle in 1958. Two years ago another store was added to the chain, this one located in Garnett, but because time did not permit him to spend a justifiable amount of time with the Garnett store, this one was closed out in June of this year. Along with his many and varied activities, Mr. Queen is now serving his first term as Finance Commissioner for the City of Ottawa. The family are active mem bers of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Since buying the store in 1958, Mr. Queen has made many chang "Charley" Queen of Queen's Self-Service Shoe Store relaxes a moment in a fast-moving schedule that keeps him on the go most of the time. es. One of the most important being a step-up to quality shoes in the medium price range for all members of the family. Mr. Queen says, "We feel by up-grading our merchandise and carrying a more complete line, we are definitely appealing to the needs of more people. We also feel that every member in every family is a potential customer of ours, and we are making every effort to expand our stock and styles to fit their needs." Mr. Queen points out that he has the only complete self-service shoe store in Ottawa, in as much as, all shoes are out in open display, individually marked and sized so that the customer is able to browse around, see everything, wait on himself and save money! Helping in the store are Mrs. Gertrude Blum who has been a saleslady since Mr, Queen purchased the store and Bonnie Brooks who has been with Self- Service Shoes for a little over one year. Adv.
