Williamsburg won a checker County delegates ers meeting held in Topeka this weekend. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Hopkins spent a few days in Tulsa with her brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Diestlehorst. Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Mize and Joel, Topeka, spent Friday nighl with her parents the G. W. Tur rells. They attended the K. U. game on Saturday and went to Salina on Sunday to see Mr Mize's father, J. 0. Mize, who is in the Ashbury Hospital. James Mize grandson of the G W. Turrells, has reported to serv ice with the U. S. Marines in Paris, S. C. Blakesley THE OTTAWA HERALD 'uesday, October 31, 1961 NEW BUILDING AT SCHOOL FOR DEAF - This new $515,000 academic building at Kansas State School For Deaf, Olathe, will be dedicated Dec. 9, 1%1. Already in use, it replaces an antiquated building in use 56 years which will be razed. Mrs. J. E. Decker gave a Halloween party for the junior Sunday School class Monday night. The J. A. Van Valkenburg's received word that their, granddaughter, Patricia Van Valkenburg, Montezuma was chosen Homecoming Queen. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Peine, Richmond, called on the S. T. Thornton's, J. K. Strider, Ottawa, was a caller. Mr. Lowell Shrader, Karen, Paul and John, Parkville, Mo., were Saturday guests. Mrs. Shrader returned home with her son after being here about five weeks. Mr. Thornton is improving from recent surgery. Mrs. Frank Davis received a bad sprain in her left shoulder when she fell on a freshly waxed floor Monday She also burned her right arm on the stove. But she is improving satisfactorily. Mrs. Vena McMillin and Mrs. W. W. Bitts are spending time in Emporia with Mrs. McMillin's sister, Mrs. Mae Lunsford, due to the serious illness of the Bitts son, Gary, who is in Newman hospital. The Quiet Day of the Week of Prayer and Self Denial was held at the Methodist Church on Thursday afternoon. Those taking part were leader Mrs. S. T Thornton, organist; Mrs. L. T. attie, Mrs. Frances Peddicord. ATS. N. E. Blair, Mrs. Etta McMillan, Mrs. Fern Shrader and Urs. J. E. Decker. Each gave alks. The offering taken will be used for medical work in Bolivia, Christian literature in Latin America and Deaconess pensions. Mr. and Mrs. Pete Johannes, flomewood; Betty Johannes, Kansas City, and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Davis and son went to Robstown, Tex., over the weekend to attend the wedding of Terry' Robe to Linda Whatley. Terry is in the Naval Air Force at Midway Island. Due to the teachers meeting Nov. 2 and 3 there will be no school Thursday and Friday. Dr. Rees Hughes, Pittsburg, who was one of the 10 Kansans recently honored for outstanding service, is a cousin of W. T. Hopkins. The Hopkins recently called on Dr. Hughes' sisters, Mrs. Dick Hubbart and Mrs. Fred Lundquist, at Fort Scott. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Perkins, Topeka, are parents of a son, weighing 9 pounds, 6 ounces. Mrs. Perkins is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Eldon Hoyt who are keeping another grandson and granddaughter while their mother is hospitalized. Singing Tires DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - After Interstate 65 was opened through north Alabama last year, th« highway was dotted with cars pulled up on the shoulder, drivers peering under the hoods. Service stations along the route were busy with motorists seeking a mechanical checkup. But that noise drivers feared was motor trouble was merely their tires singing. The singing is caused by tiny ridges in the concrete to help make the highway skid-resistant. Now the djpartment has placed signs along the route advising travelers the cause of the noise.
