Waion City Globe-Gazelle, Mason City. la. Sept. 30j 1949 1-C e Of the Peop ... By the People .. .For the People "SOMETHING FOR NOTHING" is tKe catcH phrase which national politicians have instilled in ithe minds of the masses of our country during the past 16 years. Government centralization and control is gradually replacing our Free Enterprise system in America. The latest of these proposed social reforms is the Hesire of social planners in the Federal Government to place medicine under the control of a Federal bureau. • Government Medicine Government or political medicine is a program proposed purportedly in the interest and welfare of the people which provides for the nationalization of medicine and the regimentation of the doctors, dentists, and the allied professions in these United States. Such a program is proposed tinder the guise and scheme of a Compulsory Health Insurance pro gram. 1 • Healthiest Nation Because of our present system of the practice of medicine 'American people receive the finest medical care of any nation. A Free Enterprise system encourages research and competition and because of this the people are better served. Social planners, however, would have you think differently and are trying to impress upon the people, by using draft statistics, that our health is in a deplorable state. • Free Medicine Imbued with the "Something for Nothing" idea, these reformers are appealing to the people that it is their desire to give better health and medical care to the people of this nation. They are misguiding people into believing that "free" medicine will be available to all; that there will be a complete freedom of choice of doctor; that they will be provided complete hospitalization, medicines, and all of the component parts to medical care. They have failed to state, however, that such systems have failed in other countries. "Free" medicine administered by a government is most costly and the quality of medical care is progressively lowered. 'COMMUNiTY'MEETINO: THE WAY OF DEMOCRACY Mans Ingenuity Has Conceived Nothing Better Democracy is more than a system of government. It is an attitude of mind-a technique of procedure-a way of life. It operates on the.principles, that voluntary action through group and individual initiative can solve social, community and even economic problems far more effectively than regimentation or government control. Throughout their history, the American people have met social challenge by voluntary group action which they themselves initiated and controlled. They have rarely sought aid other than that which their own free enterprise has provided. SOMETHING FOR NOTHING • More Taxes Who will pay the most of the promised "free" medical care? Government cannot produce a thing unless the people provide the funds for the government. You and the working members of your family will pay the costs of "free" medicine, in the form of MORE taxes under a compulsory health insurance program. You and every working member of your family will be forced, through a system of payroll deductions, to contribute at least 3% to provide "free" medicine. A tax added on to the employer would, of course, be reflected in the increased price of the goods or services he supplies. • When Available Persons who have been misguided may be wondering when such a program would be available. The present program provides that the people will be taxed for 3 years and funds allowed to accumulate. The planners hope that at the end of three years they will be able to produce their "free" medical care program. This means, of course, that you will receive no benefits, although you will be required to pay taxes, for three years. Is this just another tax proposal? • Choice of Physicians It has been represented that you will be able to choose your own doctor, as is your privilege today under the present system of medical care. The answer to this is "maybe." You will not always be able to pick your own doctor. If the doctor of your choice has a full panel or "patient list," you would be forced to select another— and so on, until you found a doctor who had less than the maximum number of patients. Would that satisfy you ? • Government Bureau If such a compulsory system is imposed upon you, of course, it will be administered by another government bureau. Little need be said about government bureaucratic control and efficiency because you are quite f a' miliar with their operations. The Hoover Commission's report, including the Veterans' Administration showed misuse, duplication, red tape in government, in addition to misappropriation of funds. It is a worthwhile document which reveals government inefficiency. • Communist Tendency In^the Soviet Union where the state controls everything, all forms of medical assistance are gratuitous, and are administered by health organizations of the constituent Republic, under federal guidance. It has been stated that the Truman proposal for compulsory social security medicine would lead directly to a Russian system where "private practice hardly exists." Do you want a Russian-like controlled system of medicine in this country? • Don't Be Fooled Don't be fooled into believing that social planners will be able to build a Utopia for you or th^t they are going to be another Santa Glaus. You and millions of other, working people will pay the cost of such a program, plus government waste, red tape, and administration, and in the end your medical care will cost you more than it does today. . . Write Your Congressman The Congressmen, your representatives, and senators, will determine whether you will be subjected to such a program. We suggest you write your Congressman and advise him that you "protest any program which gives the government control of medical care and imposes additional compulsory taxes." TO KEEP SOCIALISM FROM TAKING OVER OUR COUNTRY KEEP GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS OUT OF MEDICINE * Cerro Gordo County Medical Society
