THE SALINA JOURNAL MONEY SUNDAY. MAY 31. 1998 B7 Dow digit could do in computers Consultant claims many systems cannot handle Dow at 10,000 , By The Associated Press 1 NEW .YORK — While the • world struggles to avoid a year • 2000 computer crash, a technolo- , gy consultant is warning that ..some Wall Street computers •' could go berserk if the Dow Jones average crosses 10,000. The Securities and Exchange Commission and others have dismissed the possibility of computer cpnfusion if the Dow adds a fifth digit. But the Gartner Group, a technology consulting firm, says some Wall Street computers have old software that could read a 10,000 Dow as 1,000 or 0000. Automatic trading systems could mistake the all-time high for a catastrophic crash and start selling, Gartner said. The panic and confusion could snowball and expose investors to tremendous risks, said David Cappucio, a Gartner vice president. "We have talked to a few clients in the top 10 to 15 (financial firms) in the world who have identified the problem and are working on it," Cappucio said. An informal review found that the 10,000 Dow issue won't be significant. "We set up a home and invited the neighborhood to come by and take a look at what we are trying to do and ask any questions they had. It went really well." Dudark said the average price for a new home constructed in Salina is about $125,000, leaving a gap in the housing market. "There just isn't much anything being built in the $75,000 to $80,000 range," he said. "It's hard to find owner-occupied housing available in that range." Nelson said with the lot rental, carport and porch, he can still get someone into a manufactured home for less than $600 a month. Single-wide homes of about 1,400 square feet start in the low $30,000 range, while 2,000-square-foot doublewide homes start in the upper $40,000 range. Depending on options, such as a Jacuzzi tub and remote-control fireplace, a manufactured home can cost about $80,000. Cliff Powell and his wife, Dolly, recently moved into Cedar Creek from Mesa, Ariz., to be closer to their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. "We like it because it seems like you are out in the country, but we're less than a mile from Wal- Mart and Target," he said. "Salina has the small-town feel to it that Mesa used to have." Powell said he was surprised to find the quality of the development, given its cost. They sold a manufactured home in Arizona, along with the ground it sat on, for more money than it cost to buy a new home in Salina. "Part of that has to do with not owning the land out here," he said while watering his lawn earlier this week. "This was a good deal for us." WHO GIVES A HOOT ABOUT YOUR COMPUTER NEEDS?
