SUNDAY, MAY 31, 1998 LIFE THE SALINA JOURNAL T HOUSEHOLD HINTS Use tissues as backer for pins on delicate fabric Dear Heloise: There are times when I like wearing a pin on my dress or blouse, but the item I'm wearing may be of a delicate silk material and the pin is too heavy for it. Here's my solution: I use a single square of toilet tissue or white tissue wrapping paper folded into a 1 l /a -inch square, which I use as a backer. I place the tissue on the reverse side of the garment and proceed to pin the material and the tissue at the same time. This holds the pin more securely and there's no damage to the material. It may sound complicated, but it really isn't. It works for me every time. — Rose Rosen, Albany, N.Y. MILESTONES Dear Heloise: We all have seen the shoe holders with about 20 clear pockets to hold shoes that hang over doors. Well, I have found many uses for these. I have a very small bathroom. It used to be cluttered with hair-styling products and makeup. Then I hung one of these over the bathroom door. Now I can fit all my styling products, makeup and personal items in the pockets. They're clear pockets, so I can always find what I need and there is no clutter around my sink. I also have used them on back of my pantry door for spices and small jars. I can always find just what I am looking for. You also can use them in workshops, basements, kids' rooms — there are so many uses. — S.W., Rosendale, Wis. Dear Heloise: What to do with those postcard-size inserts in magazines? I tear them out, and when I sweep the floor I use two to scoop up the dirt. The cards are stiff enough and disposable. I don't need a dustpan! — Mary Stoddard, Warren, N.J. Dear Heloise: A while back there was a hint on removing oil spots from concrete and I forgot to take it out of the paper. Could you please publish it again? — Virginia Croft, N. Fort My- ers, Fla. Dear Virginia: I sure can. Here are a few suggestions. If the stains are fresh and you happen to have nondeodorized, clay-type cat litter or dry cement on hand, you can sprinkle that on the oil spots. Use a stiff-bristle brush to rub it in, then leave it overnight so it can absorb the oil. The next morning, all you have to do is sweep it up and throw it in the trash. Heavy stains may require more than one application. If you don't have either of these on hand or if the stains are old, commercial driveway cleaners are available at automotive and home-improvement stores. If the stains are really stubborn" or numerous, rent a high-powered water sprayer (pressure washer). To find one, check the Yellow Pages of your phone book under Rental Equipment Companies. Not only can you clean your driveway, but you can also use it to clean brick walls and remove: ;old paint from surfaces. — Heloise Send a money- or time-saving hint to Heloise, PO Box 795000, San Antonio, TX 78279-5000 or fax it to 210- HELOISE. I can't answer your letter personally, but I will use the best hints received in my column.
