The 6-foot-8 Walker, of Roberta, already has been named SEC Player of the Year and Basketball Weekly magazine made him a first-team All-America selection. The highlight of Takagi's freshman season came in February at the Rolex-National Indoor Singles Championships in Houston, where she upset No. 1 -ranked Gretchen Rush of Trinity (Texas) 3-6, 7-6, 7-6. That victory put the Fukuoka, Japan, native in the national rankings, where she is now No.

Machado's Often, who has a 3-0-0 record in five career starts, heads a field of eight fillies and mares in today's featured 6i-furlong, $13,500 Kate's Cabin Purse at the Downs. Tough competition may come from William A. Anderson's Princess Balata and Mrs. Robert Clin-kenbeard's Digital. Mike Manganello will ride Often, a 4-year-old daughter of Ornatan assigned 112 pounds.

Often won two races at Hialeah Park this spring, and in her local debut she dueled for command from the outset, gained the lead entering the turn and maintained it to the upper stretch, then tired and faded, beaten nine lengths by Bullet Bonnet Princess Balata, whose rider will be Daryl Montoya, was runner-up in her last start at Keeneland. Digital, with Charlie Woods Jr. assigned, competed at Aqueduct this spring. Others in the field are Robert O'Conner et al's Coming Home, Donald A. Oren and Paul Lichtfeld's Colorful Countess, Winsome Farm and Thomas Ellis' Snow Cone, George E.

Warren et al's Flat Boat and Carl Short's Count The Hour. McShane, the odds-on favorite ridden by Pat Day, regained the lead from 30-1 shot Jetabid and held on to win by a head in the $18,650 In-separable Purse on yesterday's twilight card at Churchill Downs. With a crowd of 8,483 looking on, McShane and Day persevered for a 64-furlong clocking of 1:16, fastest of the meeting at that distance and just two-fifths of a second off the track record. Jetabid, ridden by Jim McKnight, finished three lengths ahead of Deuces Are Loose, with Ken Becker up. McShane paid $3.40, $3 and $2.20..

Jetabid's prices were $10.40 and $120, and Deuces Are Loose returned $2.20. "This horse ran the way I expected, but I had a hard time getting him to change his lead," said Day, who also had won aboard the 6-year-old gelding earlier in the meeting. "He didn't start running until the eighth pole, where I finally got him to change." Jim Burchell, trainer of McShane for owners Karen Arnett and Alvin Haynes, gave Day the credit. "He's taught this horse how to re-lai and he's really improved him," Burchell said. "You're talking about a 6-year-old horse who's been run as far as he can as fast as be can all his life.

"The horse I felt would be there with us was Deuces Are Loose, and it surprised me to see that three horse (Jetabid) there at the end.
