A 59-yard try on the final play of the game was short Quarterback Jon Roddy passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to pace James Madison to a 35-14 victory over Morehead State in a non-conference game in Harrisonburg, Va.

Morehead State trailed by only 21-14 at the half, but the Eagles were unable to generate any offense in the second half under reserve quarterback Jeff McGuire, who replaced starter Adrian Breen after he bruised his shoulder late in the first half. Before his exit, Breen had completed 6 of 9 passes for 102 yards. The Dukes (2-0) scored first when Roddy found wide receiver Rick Rice down the left sideline and hit him with a 42-yard scoring pass. Morehead State (0-2) took the ensuing kickoff and marched 72 yards in eight plays, with tailback Daman Stephens going 24 yards for the touchdown. From that point on, mistakes hampered the Eagles and the Dukes were quick to take advantage.

The most costly turnover occurred when Jonathan Cage lost the ball on his own 33. JMU linebacker Charles Haley plucked the ball out of the air and raced untouched into the end zone with 2:30 left in the first quarter. Morehead State answered with a 59-yard scoring drive early in the Associated Press Quarterback Danny Sparkman set a school record for pass completions last night, but a mistake-ridden Memphis State offense handed Division I-AA Murray State a 10-10 tie. It was the second tie in as many weeks for the Tigers, who are 1-0-2. Last week, Memphis State tied Mississippi 17-17.

The Racers are now 2-0-1. Sparkman completed 21 of 37 passes for 261 yards, one touchdown and was intercepted once. He also became only the second Tiger quarterback to reach the career passing mark. But the Tigers committed seven turnovers and bobbled a snap on a field goal attempt. During the second half alone.

Tiger fumbles came on the Racer 16 and 3 and an interception stopped a potential scoring drive on the Murray State 27. The Racers took a 10-3 lead following a mistake-ridden first half that saw seven turnovers including six in the first quarter alone. Four of the turnovers, including a bad snap on a field goal attempt that resulted in a 30-yard loss for the Tigers, were committed by Memphis State. The Racers took a 3-0 lead on a 25-yard field goal by Paul Hickert following the busted three-point try by Memphis State. The Tigers came back with a 36-yard field goal by Don Glosson after Murray State gave up an interception with 9:32 left in the half.

The Tiger defense held the Racers on their own 37, but when Murray State punted, there were too many Memphis State players on the field. The Dukes came right back with a 23-yard scoring pass from Roddy to Neil Wilkinson and were never threatened again. Roddy added another touchdown in the final quarter when he scored from the one.

JMU's next two scores came on safeties one on a blocked punt in the end zone and the other coming when Haley tackled Stephens in the end zone. Joe Henry added a 32-yard field goal with 53 seconds remaining to finish the scoring. Quarterback Marvin Collier ran for 115 yards and passed for 71 to lead visiting Middle Tennessee State to a 35-10 victory over Georgia Southern. Collier, in his first college football start, threw for one touchdown and ran for another. In the second quarter, he threw an eight-yard TD pass to Donte Lofton and opened the third period with a 54-yard scoring run.

Junior Mike Clark ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns as Akron blanked Kent State 24-0 in a non-conference game at the Rubber Bowl. The Zips scored in each period to even their record at 1-1. Kent State fell to 0-1. Reggie Taylor scored on a fourth-down play from the one-yard line as time ran out, giving undefeated Cincinnati a 29-27 victory over Youngstown State. Youngstown State (0-2) had taken a 27-23 lead on Jerry Mapes' second touchdown, a two-yard run, with 1:13 to play in the game.

Cincinnati (3-0), however, downed the ensuing kickoff in the end zone and then drove 80 yards for the winning score. Quarterback Danny McCoin, who had previously thrown touchdown passes of 56 yards to Roosevelt Mukes and three yards to Matt Daniels, completed passes of 23, 31, 20 and 12 yards on the drive. Western Carolina quarterback Willie Perkins passed for 239 yards and one touchdown and kicker Kirk Roach booted three field goals to lead the Catamounts to a 30-3 non-conference victory over homestand-ing Tennessee Tech. The victory allowed Western Carolina to improve to 2-0 for the season, while Tech's Golden Eagles lost for the second time this season and for the 13th game in a row. gave the Racers' new life and three plays later quarterback Kevin Sisk tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to flanker Stanley Howard who was all alone.

Memphis State managed its only touchdown midway through the third period when Sparkman connected with flanker Jerry Harris for 11 yards. (AP) Terrell Landry passed for 243 yards and one touchdown and Ardashir Nobahar kicked three field goals as Grambling State opened its football season with a 30-20 victory over Southwestern Athletic Conference rival Alcorn State last night. The victory was the 321st of Grambling State head coach Eddie Robinson's career, leaving two short of tying Paul "Bear" Bryant as the all-time collegiate leader in victories. Grambling built a 27-7 halftime lead and held off an Alcorn comeback that closed the margin to 27-20 late in the third quarter. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Landry passed 13 yards to Robert Williams for the game's first touchdown and later sneaked one yard for a touchdown.

Wayne Hill scored on a 20-yard run for the Tigers. Nobahar, a transfer from Alabama State, who is an Iranian native, kicked field goals of 34, 37 and 36 yards. Alcorn, which won the SWAC with an unbeaten record a year ago, got two touchdown passes from quarterback Richard Myles 17 yards to Darryl Joe and 20 yards to Perry Quails. Milton Barney returned a punt 57 yards for the other Braves' touchdown. Miss Kentucky 1985 Laurie Keller I "I Front End Alignment Check caster, camber and toe-in I and adjust as necessary.
