Printed Pattern QUESTION: What are Plovers? * ' * * ANSWER: Plover is the name for a large group of birds' including snipes and sandpipers. These birds are often called waders, but rarely do they go in the water/ In the United States, one of the more common plovers is the Golden American Plover. It is both an Atlantic and Pacific bird and breeds on the Arctic coast from Point Barrow to Baffin Island and south as far as Manitoba. In the fall, the eastern species migrate along the Atlantic Ocean over Nova Scotia and New England. The American Golden Plover measures about 10 inches long and has a wing span averaging 21 inches. The body of the bird is round and plump. Its bill is swollen and hard toward the tip but soft at the base. With the change of seasons, the bird's plumage changes. In, spring, the plover is a golden brown above and black on the belly. This coloring changes _ to a yellowish color above and brown below in autumn. The birds live in large; bands and eat crickets, grass seeds, berries and sea weed. When feeding, at low tide or often at night, each bird is on its own. If the group is alarmed, a shrill whistle is sounded and the birds rise to meet at a common center arid move away in a compact group. . • •- •••• : - 4-7 (Craig Buckland of New 'Britain, Connecticut, wins a prize for this question.
