MONDAY, JANUARY .27, 1969 Washington D.C. School Killing WASHINGTON (AP) — An assistant high school principal has been fatally wounded in the sixth robbery at a Washington high school since September. Herman L. Clifford, 45, died Friday afternoon four hours after being shot in the chest while scuffling with one of three youths who robbed the Gardozo High School bank of about JP.50. Police arrested a 17-year-old student from another school shortly after the robbery, and searched for an 18-year-old former Cardozo student they believed did the shooting. Police said three youths, one wearing a ski mask, tied up a teacher who acts as bank manager and two student employes. Clifford tried to stop the youths as they fled down a hallway. Brandstadt, M.D. The body temperature of a child is not as stable as that of an adult. In children, sudden fevers that disappear as mysteriously as they occur are common. Now it has been found that, in some children chewing gum steadily for five minutes or more may raise the temperature as much as 1.4 degrees (100 degrees). The cause is n-': the gum but the exercise of mu> cles close to the place where the thermometer is held. To a lesser degree, vigorous running or other exercise may cause a child's temperature to rise. For this reason you should let your child rest for 15 minutes before taking his temperature. It is not how. high his temperature goes but the cause of the rise that is important. Whenever your child has an unexplained fever of 100 degrees or over that last as for more than a day you should call your doctor. Q. I have a son who is autistic. It takes him a very long time • to go to sleep and this is getting worse. Does his autism cause this? A. Autism is characterized by a complete failure to communicate a desire to be let alone and an insistence on certain rit- rituals being followed at meal time and bedtime. Although deficient in emotional and social development, an autistic child is far from being mentally defective despite the fact that he may give that impression. Your son's difficulty going to sleep may well be a part of his autistic behavior. The cause of autism js not known but some of these children can be cured with proper, treatment. If you have not already done so you should write to the National In- situte of Mental Health, Bethesda, Md., for more detailed in- ormation. Q. Can BCG vaccine be given to a child, 8, who has a positive reaction to the tuberculin test If the chest X rays are negative how long will it be before the'child gets tuberculosis. A—-BCG vaccine is not recom- , mended by the Public Health Service because other methods j | of prevention and treatment are i ! highly effective. It can be given ! ' only to persons who have a; negative tuberculin test. A po- j sitive reaction does not neces-; sarily mean a person has active j ITB but only that he has at j : one time had some contact, with the tubercle bacilus. This con- j tact may have resulted in a' relative immunity to the dis- • ease. Please send your questions an ! /comments to Wayne G. Brandstadt, M.D., in care of this pa• per. While Dr. Brandsadt can-, not answer individual letters, ho j will answer letters of general interest in future columns. j TODAY'S BOY NEEDS RESPONSIBILITIES qvim or*z Q — Which president lived the longest aft r leaving the Vt'hitc House? Civic and school authorities agree that "busy boys are better boys." Newspaperboys profitably invest their spare-time and exuberant energies in gaining business experience. They learn the value of money by working for it. Of ail part-time jobs, a newspaper route provides the best over-all training for future business success. As one prominent educator wrote, "Many types of work which young people engage in do not provide the same experiences that the paper route offers. A paper route is a miniature business. The newspaperboy is actually on his own."
