C 4 THE COURIER-JOURNAL, THURSDAY, NO EM PER 1, m U of L has shot (ion") at hiring Schnellenberger Continued from Page One . might be able to do the same thing ; in Louisville that he did in Miami, which was to lead a drive to get the : sort of on-campus stadium that helps recruiting and fosters enthu-; siasm. ; As crazy as it may seem, given the losing records of recent " years, any university capable of . having a national basketball champion as U of L did in 1980 also has to be considered capable . of having a football champion. "You have to get somebody who knows how to win," Crum says. "A lot of people think they know how, but only a few really do." A Crum-Schnellenberger combination would give U of L the most attractive coaching team in the na- tion. It would open new vistas, new possibilities, that until now have been only dreams. And the best thing about Schnellenherger is that, like UK's Jerry Claiborne, he's committed to win-; ning without cheating or doing any-' thing to damage a university's academic reputation. "The university has to be committed to excellence in both academics and football," he said. Schnellenberger at U of L? UK, U of L products on All-Star ballot ; Former University of Kentucky stars Sam Bowie and Melvin Turpin and University of Louisville product Lancaster Gordon are listed on the ". National Basketball Association's ; All-Star ballot, the league an- nounced. : Five other rookies also were named on the 96-player ballot by a : panel of NBA writers and broadcast-: ers: Chicago's Michael Jordan, Sam I Perkins of Dallas, Indiana's Vera - Fleming, San Antonio's Alvin Robertson and Houston's Akeem ; Olajuwon. The Feb. 10 game will be played ' at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapo-v lis, and the seating configuration for ; the event is expected to produce a '. record attendance for the annual ; midseason showcase of NBA talent. NBA commissioner David Stern ' said seating in the stadium, which accommodates more than 60,000 for football, would be arranged in a "mini-dome" configuration that will seat about 37,000. Little interest is shown in picking up Harris PITTSBURGH (AP) National Football League teams appeared disinterested yesterday In acquiring running back Franco Harris, the NFL's No. 3 rusher who was released by the Seattle Seahawks , Tuesday. .' Even Harris's agent, Bart Beier, said he didn't think another team will try to sign the former Pittsburgh Steelers star. "We're 10 weeks into the season ... it's more than half over. Teams don't want to change in midstream," Beier said. If so, then UofL needs to hire somebody like Schnellenberger: an established coach who has proven he knows how to win within the rules of the NCAA and the university. It would help media relations and ticket sales if he also had an upbeat, outgoing, positive personality. One of Weber's problems was that he was so laid-back and low-key that he seemed to have trouble motivating his players and captivating the public. If an established coach isn't available, the next best thing would be the top assUant from a pro gram that has been successful for a long time. That's exactly what UofL did when it hired Crum away from UCLA in 1971. Surely there has to be the football equivalent of Crum at Georgia or Penn State or some place like that What UofL doesn't need Is a Sam Wyche or a Watson Brown, young coaches who will honor their contracts only until a bigger and better offer comes along. Schnellenberger could be the right man at the right time, just as he was at Miami. If U of L is ever going to be any more in football than what it has been, it now has the opportunity of a lifetime. Schnellenberger would be worth whatever he costs, because he's one of the few coaches in the country with the ability and potential to do what Crum has done: generate so much revenue and respect that his salary seems a bargain. At the They're Off luncheon last spring before the Kentucky Derby, Schnellenberger, who played played at old Flaget High School and UK, spoke at length of his love for Louisville and the Derby. He even said that Miami's national championship had its roots in Louisville. Maybe he might have more interest than anybody might imagine. Then again, maybe it's only a pipe dream. 1984 CORVETTE 6445 48 month lease 15,000 miles per year closed end". Maintenance and insurance extra. For one thing, Swain should find out what it takes to be among the upper echelon of college football. UofL needs to know about the financial resources of, say, Indiana, Clemson, Purdue, Pittsburgh, Arkansas, Virginia Tech and, yes, the University of Kentucky. The recruiting phone bills of some major teams might be more than U of L's total recruiting budget. Olsen said yesterday that he will be traveling a lot and talking with .AnreV8n SALE .
