Friday's announcement completes a succession plan put in place 15 months ago when Arledge was elevated to ARLEDGE chairman dnd Westin took over his old job as ABC News president. The two have essentially run the division in tandem since then. ! Arledge, 66, said nothing about retiring. He'll retain his title as chairman to consult on news division matters, and was named senior vice president of ABC. ' Royal Britain to visit Russia MOSCOW — Britain's Prince Andrew is visiting Russia's second-largest city, where he will take part in the naming ofa replica ofa flagship from Peter the Great's time. Andrew, who is in St. Petersburg as part of a three-day Baltic tour, .also will visit a center where discharged servicemen are retrained for civilian jobs. t, In addition, he is scheduled to visit a museum in ANDREW Tsarkoye Selo, formerly known as Pushkin, where he will deliver fragments of decorations from Catherine the Great's apartments. The decorations were restored by the Wedgewood china factory in Britain and paid for by the British royal family. Now he's doing something NEW YORK — Jerry Seinfeld will hit the road this summer, and he won't be doing nothing. , ; Now that "Seinfeld" is over, the comic is taking his stand-up act on the road to prepare for "I'm Telling You for the Last Time," an August HBO special in which he will retire the material he's been using for years. .-. ; 'X' cigarette role catches fire DETROIT — When he was hired to pjaj the malevolent and mysterious Cigarette Smoking Man on "The X-Files," William B. Davis thought it was a minor role of lij- tle consequence. j He didn't have a line of dialogue in that first appearance. But as the show's popvj- larity grew, so did that of the smoking character. r| i Davis said fans even ask him to aiitq- graph cigarettes. ' * :'; B From Wire Service Reports T ADVICE Widows admonish wives to enjoy retired husbands Dear Ann Landers: A while back, I read the letter from "Just About Had It in West Virginia." Her husband had retired, and she was complaining that he was underfoot and a terrible nuisance. I would like to tell another story that might help put things in the proper perspective. I hope you will print it. My husband was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) at the age of 56. Within 18 months, he was a quadriplegic and on a ventilator. He continued to fight for the best quality of life he could have and managed to live another six years. I cared for him at home. We never had the chance to enjoy his retirement years. How I would love to have had him follow me around the ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. kitchen, getting in my way, lifting the lids on the pots to see what's for dinner. It would be wonderful if he would rearrange my cupboards and tag along when I go to the supermarket. Women who are lucky enough to still have their husbands should get inventive and find interests and hobbies for the guy. They also should count their blessings and stop complaining. Sign me — Lonely Nights in Washington Dear Washington: Your sad sisterhood has a large membership, and I have heard from many of them. Keep reading for another one: Dear Ann Landers: I am sick and tired of all the whining in your column about retired husbands. These women have no idea how lucky they are. Maybe my story will help them see their foolishness. My husband spent 26 years as a dedicated, loyal police officer. He was forced to retire because of politics in the depart- TV TONIGHT ment. At first, he became depressed, but finally, he perked up and began to look forward to taking trips and seeing the children. Three years into his retirement, a week before his 57th birthday, he dropped dead ofa heart attack. I would like to say to those women who complain about their retired husbands, be grateful. You have someone to grow old with, to aggravate you, to kiss you goodnight, to move furniture you can't lift and to drive you over roads you'd rather not be on. Please, ladies, quit complaining and smell the roses. — A Cop's Widow in Auburn, Calif. Dear Ann Landers: Here's an elderly parent story with a happier ending than many such letters that have appeared in your column. I hope you will print it. My mother always was taken care of by my father. They had a wonderful marriage, but she depended on him for everything. She couldn't drive and didn't know how to write a check or make a decisiop on her own. When Dad died, my nuriiuj- ing, divorced sister took over the jobj of coddling Mother, who became whlpy, lonely, more helpless than ever and very unhappy. Any offers by me and anothejr sister to have her move in with'lu^ promptly were rejected. Mom was determined to stay in her own home. Finally, after a few years, the burdens became too much for my sister, and Mother decideQ she had better go to a retirement home. I Ann, within a few weeks, I saw a motheji 1 I had never known. She has a cute sense ojf humor and extraordinary "people skills.*' Now, at age 97, she is rarely in her room when I call. She pushes her walker all over the place and urges the other residents to join her in taking various classes. He* 1 mission, she says, is to cheer up all thosfe "old people." Don't you love it? Needless to say, we do. — Her Delighted Daughters • Dear Daughters: What a beautiful letter.
