THE SALINA JOURNAL Almanac THURSDAY, MAY 28, 1998 B3 JOYCE JILLSON .Creators Syndicate Inc. HOROSCOPES • ARIES (March 21 -April 19). Try not to eat or spend too much. Take an offer into account, but don't commit yourself until you're sure. • TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Take a class that will improve your money-making potential. You receive an old-fashioned declaration of love. You could easily slip into a more prestigious job. You could find yourself believing in a new philosophy. • GEMINI (May 21-June 21). A sweetheart's facial expressions can help you determine the truth. Don't let a cranky individual pick a fight with you. A wonderful compliment tonight shows you how closely you are being observed. • CANCER (June 22-July 22). Money comes from legal matters. Romance with a -——4 Scorpio is possible, though it may take a while to get started. A mischievous impulse could prompt you to play a practical joke. • LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Let a loved one know how you feel about the actions of a mutual friend. A career fantasy can come true with more determination and conviction. You are attracted to someone against your better judgment. • TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (May 28). Family issues occupy center stage this year, as longtime friends can temporarily drop out of your life due to distance. Children especially are a valuable source of joy. Plan fun activities involving the outdoors now. Your best signs for love are Gemini and Pisces. You could marry in October or February. Your lucky numbers are 28, 34, 37, 48 and 49. • VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Don't forget what you promised to do for someone close. You might be tempted by an offer of temporary work that pays very well. Try to be tolerant of a new idea, though it is quite different from yours. • LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You step up to the plate when it's necessary. Try to be diplomatic. A suggestion you've made is put to the test and works. A love requests some time for a private talk. You could engage in a romantic triangle. • SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Luck comes through patience and persuasiveness with those who are set in their ways. Avoid letting yourself be pressured into thinking that your feelings in a situation count less than anyone else's. • SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You set the example for a young person. Work on improving your concentration, and work goes quickly, without effort. Your lover could ask for a deeper commitment. It is easy to get what you ask for. • CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You and a Leo could go into business together. Don't forget to make a critical call. A friend of a friend is an important professional connection for you. For love, put into effect your secret plan. • AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). A chance meeting could lead to romance. Give love a second try. The evening is full of surprises. Don't try, to please everyone at once, and don't forget to please yourself. • PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). A letter could contain information that leads to money. Friends may be short on patience, but this is no reflection on you. A co-worker might have some interesting news. Satina today WEATHER Kansas today PEOPLE 94 HIGH 65 LOW Today, mostly sunny. Cassidy has re-recorded a soulful version of "I Think I Love You," the first single off his new CD "Old Trick New Dog" released earlier this month. The song has turned up in "Scream 2" and a Levi's commercial. Cassidy's first CD in seven years also includes remakes of such '70s hits as "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat" and "I Woke Up in Love This Morning." "I'm not redoing these songs because-1 feel some obligation or pressure to do! them," said Cassidy. " "I'm doing them because I really the songs," he said. Letterman presses the limit DARBY, Mont. — David Letterman can't escape traffic tickets even in a state noted for its high-speed highways. While Montana has no posted daytime speed limit on its highways, Letterman found out the same can't be said of city speed limits. He was stopped Saturday for driving 38 mph in a 25 mph zone and was LETTERMAN pleasant as he paid a $50 fine, said Larry Rose, the town marshal in this southwest Montana town of 800. Letterman has made a running joke of his frequent speeding tickets while commuting between his home in Connecticut and CBS studios in New York City. Novelist speaks out on sex NORFOLK, England — Barbara Cartland wants men to be gentle again and for all the talk about sex, sex, sex to stop! "If you read newspapers today ... it is sex, sex, sex all the time, and it is not what we want," the 96-year-old romance novelist said Wednesday. "We must get back to England being a great example to the world, and it is the men who will lead us to that," she said. Nurse Batched pins officer LEESBURG, Va. — Louise Fletcher was charged with pinning a police officer between her car and his cruiser. Fletcher, 63, injured the officer Sunday night after he stopped on a road to remove a deer carcass, authorities said. She was charged with reckless driving. Reader tells how to cope with hubby under foot Dear Ann Landers: A reader who signed herself "Totally Anonymous" complained that her recently retired husband has no hobbies and is driving her crazy. I have two suggestions: 1) She can tell him if he knows so damn much about cooking and cleaning, she will quit doing both and the jobs are his for the rest of his life. 2) Go out and buy a computer and put him on the Internet. I can guarantee her that she will not see or hear from him for months on end. I know what I am talking about because it happened to me. — Bye Bye Forever in Texas Dear Bye Bye: So it happened to you, too? My mail tells me that the Internet may become the principal homewrecker ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. of the next century. What is a hobby for many has turned into an addiction for others. Advanced technology is wonderful, but it is creating a batch of new problems. Dear Ann Landers: You've printed several letters about how cheap and easy it is to keep snakes. You mentioned that pythons crush their prey. Not true. Snakes suffocate their prey by constriction, gradually limiting muscle movement until breathing is impossible. Second, it is neither cheap nor easy to keep snakes. Reptiles are high-maintenance pets. They require sun lamps and other heat sources, food and nutritional supplements, plus a lot of room to wander, sun themselves, shed and exercise. Many people who thought it was cool to get an iguana didn't know what to do when it grew to be 6 feet long. Feeding snakes can be complicated. TV TONIGHT Sometimes, you must stun or kill their food — especially rats. Then, there are medical concerns. Salmonella infection affects reptiles just as it does humans. Reptiles also are prone to mouth sores, internal parasites, skin ulcers and other diseases. And not all vets will treat reptiles. Finally, there are safety concerns. You may have heard stories of boas working their way through plumbing systems i:i apartment buildings and lizards wrapping themselves around a car's engine block, not to mention the harm a reptile can do to a pet or a small child. I don't mean to discourage people from having reptiles as pets. I just want to spare some innocent creatures unnecessary harm because their owners are misinformed. Your readers who are interested in reptiles should do some research with their local zoos before buying. — Reptile Enthusiast in New Jersey Dear Enthusiast: Forgive me, but I am more interested in the safety of my readers than in the well-being of reptiles. I would not recommend reptiles as pets for anyone under 16 years of age. As I've said repeatedly, I would rather have a canary. At least they sing. Dear Ann Landers: I've enjoyed your column for more than 30 years. Now, I'd like to give something back. Here's a story I found in Curmudgeon's Corner, a local newsletter I also enjoy: President Coolidge invited some Vermont friends to dine at the White House. They were worried about their table manners and decided to do everything President Coolidge did. The meal passed smoothly until coffee was served. Coolidge poured his coffee into a saucer. The guests followed suit. He added sugar and cream. The visitors did likewise. Then, Coolidge leaned over and gave his to the cat. — Andy in Evanston, 111. 5/28/98 9 PBS, Bunker Hill-Hays QNBC, Wichita QFOX, Wlchlta-Sallna 3 CBS. Topeka Q| Access 6.
