Scottsvili.e, July 10. Our farmers ave finished cutting the largest and best crop of wheat ever raised in this portion of Mitchell county, and are now well into the oat harvest, which bids fair to equal any crop ever raised. There is an im mense acreage of this cereal. Potatoes will be a burden, as there is Buch a large acreage of them. Many of our farmers will build this year, and before another harvest will be living in more pleasant and comfortable homes.

The crops will let most of them out of debt, with some to spare for a nest egg. Every farmer in this locality is determined to not be caught napping in the future, and many assure The Champion they will "lay by" enough of this year's mammoth crops to safely bridge them over a year like 1890. The Scottsville Neitt and its energetic, able editor and bright paragrapher, Sew ard Jones, has said so many bright thoughts for his town and county that Thk Champion is at a loss to know what more can be said. The place is badly in need of another first-class general store A town of this size will support two or three general stores. We only have one.

The country will amply pay another, and here is a choice loca tion. Other branches of trade ure well represented. L. G. Uuson, one of our Dioneers.

carries a full line of furniture, and W. F. Lipke is our hard ware dealer. These gentlemen have made money, and they are stayers. We have a good lumber yard, owned exclu sively by Mitchell county men, who have extensive lumber interests in Arkansas.

J. E. Hesser is the manager. The New York store, a mammoth concern, and a branch of the Beloit store of the same name, is with one exception the largest general store in Mitchell county. It is under the management of Max Hasgall who has lately built a handsome rest dence here, and putting all the rumors together, and of course everybody be lieves them, he will occupy it in a few weeks with his hands: me and accom plished helpmate through life.

W. T. Daniels, our grain dealer, wh went to California some time ago to bet ter himself, has returned, and no one ca now make him believe but that Scottsville is the best town in northwest The Messrs. Culps, C. W.

and F. M. who are also in California, will return, soon. They have lived here for many years, and were at all times among our most enterprising and public spirited citizens and business men. Since Seward Jones, our newspaper man, did the wise act in getting married and settling down to housekeeping, his wife has made a different man of him, as well as changed the tone of his Nact.

One now would think his paper was edited by a minister of the goBpel. Certainly it is that he has reformed to a large ex tent. Go where you may there is no more in viting county anywhere than iB seen around Scottsville. It is a lovely and commanding sight, and every farm is in a high state of cultivation. The town offers superior advantages over most of others, from the fact that business is not overcrowded in any avocation.

It has a trade that sister towns are envious of, Those seeking locations will do well to stop off at The Champion is appreciated here. The people will read the fearless and outspoken Champion, the paper that is so fearlessly and independently advocating the true interests of the masses. A KANSAS INVENTION'. The "Cyclone Self-Generating Power," a New Discovery. Thomas Bisbing of Frankfort was in the city yesterday.

Mr. Bisbing is one of the proprietors of the cyclone self-generating power, a contrivance that comes as near perpetual motion as the world has ever got. It consists. of a tall flue or chimney, through which, Mr. Bisbing claims, a current of air forever circulates.

This current of air turns a wheel, on the same principle of a windmill, and is strong enough to run ordinary machinery. It is of sufficient power to run a muchine sufficiently large to supply electricity for the largest houses, Mr. Bisbing has been east during the past two months, and has had a model of his invention with him. He went east for the purpose of organizing a stock company and was successful. At Aurora and Chicago he formed a company of nearly a million dollars and the machine will be sold all over the world.

Mr. Bisbing says two or three United States senators have taken stock in the concern, and it now has plenty of financial backing. Mr. Bisbing, before he discovered this wonderful invention, was a poor man at Frankfort. He was engaged in the business of moving houses, and has been working on the theory he has recently perfected for a number of years.

His success in easily inducing capitalists to take stock in it is proof that there is merit in it. He is satisfied that his invention will become popular at once, and that it will sell like wildfire. Its simplicity causes wonder that nobody ever thought of it before. That Kansas will be benefited by this invention and the manufacture of the machinery in this state there is no doubt. 7-0-ot iM.J. CUA lia, Mayor. Used in Millions of Homes THE SOUND OF THUNDER. How to Ascertain How Far A way the Thunder One of tho most torso mid succinct descriptions of a natural phenomenon Is that recently given by M. llirn, in which bo says that tho sound which is know ns thunder is duo simply to the fact that tho air traversed by an oloc-tric spark, that is, a flash of lightning, Is suddenly raised to a very high tom-poritluro and has its volume, niovoover, considerably Increased.

Tho column ot gas thus suddenly boated and expanded is sometimes several miles long ii'kI. as tho duration of tho Hash Is not over I ho millionth of second, It follows that tho noiso hursts forth at once from tho whole column, though, for an observer at any one place, It commences where tho light ning flash Is at tho least, dislaneo. 111 pivolso terms, the beginning of the thunderclap fives the minimum distance of tho lightning, and the duration of tho rolling of tho thunder the length of tho column of heated air. lVof. llirn also remarks that when a flash of lightning strikes the ground, It is not ne cessarily from tho nlaco struck that tho first nolso is heard.

Again ho points out that a bullet whistles lu traversing tho air. so that wo can, to a certain extent, follow its flight. Tho same thing also happens with a falling meteorite just before striking tho earth. Tho nolso actually heard bus been compared to tho sound produced whon ono tears linen, it is due, realty, to tho fact that tho air rapidly pushed on ono Bido of tho projectile in front, whether bullet or meteorite, quickly rushos back to fill tho gup loft In tho rear. Ono of our regular Sources of amusement, sho -writes, was to place bowl of water, with a piece -tt soap Heating in it, in Sir. As noon ns tho 'coon perceived the basin bo would draw nour, peer into it, discover the soap and almost smile with delight. Then, squatting on his hind legs, ho would begin to dabble bit) foro paws la the water and to rub tho soap between them, so supremely happy that the sight of him was enough to provoke laughter. Finally the suds would rise to ho edgojof the bowl and seriously inconvenience him in his work.

A pause always ensued while tho 'coon gave tho subject grave consideration. Ho had had enough experience to know that to proceed further was dangerous. At last, desire overcoming prudence, he would hcramblo upon tho basin's edge, trying to find a hold with bis sharp claws on tho smooth surface. Then operations would begin anew, and soou he would be once more lost In beatific enjoyment. But bis bliss never endured very long.

Suddenly there would come a loss of balance and wild efforts to regain it; then a splash, followed by a great commotion amid tho soapsuds and water, and, finally, tho reappearance of the 'coon, white with suds, drenched and blinded, making for the nearest hiding place as soon as he could see, his way. After a season of retirement, during which he was evidently endeavoring to re.cover his self-respect, he would emerge and carefully Bteer clear of baftina of wutcr with enticing cakes of soap in them for tho rest of the day.
