Pumpkins' hopes smashed CHICAGO — The city has squashed plans for a free summer concert by the hometown Smashing Pumpkins. City officials said the show, planned for July 7 at Grant Park, would probably attract 100,000 people — twice as many as the lakefront park could hold safely. "It's one of the biggest heartbreaks I've ever had in my life," singer and guitarist Billy Corgan said. Soldier Field, one of the few venues that could handle the crowd, apparently w#s unavailable for July 7, Corgan said. The date is the Chicago band's 10th anniversary. Neighbor buys Carey's house BEDFORD, N.Y. — The nine-bedroom mansion built by singer Mariah Carey and Sony Music executive Tommy Mottola fetched a record $20.5 million when it was sold shortly after the couple's divorce in March. The buyer was neighbor Nelson Peltz, chief executive of Triarc Cos., which runs Arby's, Snapple and Royal Crown Cola. "He's got a wife and six kids. He needed a rooms," said Peltz's lawyer, Neale Albert. The 51-acre estate about 40 miles north of New York City also includes two swimming pools and a recording studio. The purchase price was nearly twice that of any previous residential sale 'in Westchester County, according to the state. ADVICE Happy couples say great sex not that important Dear Ann Landers: I read the letter from "Lucky but Confused in Santa Clarita," who was considering marriage to a man for whom she had little passion. You told her to date others and grow up. I would have given different advice. My first marriage was to a man about whom I was desperately passionate, but 10 years of knock- your-socks-off sex didn't compensate for the serious flaws in our relationship. The man I am now married to is romantic and committed, and we are perfectly compatible. He is kind, compassionate, intelligent and communicative, and he worships the ground I walk on. Our sex life is just so-so. "Lucky" should hang on to her man. ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. Passion and super sex are a lot like sneezing. It feels terrific while you're doing it, but when it's over, it's over. Ninety-nine percent of a successful marriage has little to do with the time you spend in bed. "Lucky" should ask herself the same question you always tell women who are considering divorce — "Would you be better off with him or without him?" Or, to put it another way, can she be happy without knock-your-socks-off sex? — Been There and Done That in Gaithersburg, Md. Dear Gaithersburg: I agree — opt for the man who has good character, and teach him how to satisfy you. Great lovemaking is part instinct and part communicating what you enjoy. Great sex can, in time, become less exciting, but a relationship that embodies respect, admiration and mutual interests as well as physical attraction has the best chance to endure. From New Market, Md.: You were not very sympathetic to "Lucky but Confused." My wife is less than passionate TV TONIGHT about sex, but we are the most loving couple I know. In our 20 years, we have been best friends as well as lovers. Tacoma, Wash.: Dating others is not the solution for "Lucky but Confused," and in the end, she may lose him. After a long marriage, my wife and I divorced. Our sex life had been OK, but it never sizzled. While dating after the divorce, I discovered that a willing teacher and a cooperative partner can make sex fun and exciting. If I had known that earlier, it might have saved my marriage. Catonsville, Md.: Sex is a learned skill and an art, and it takes time to become good at it. You should have suggested instruction manuals, counselors and videos. Brentwood, Tenn.: I hope "Lucky" will not give up on her boyfriend and leave it to fate to bring them back together. She should make a conscious effort to put some romance into the relationship. How about weekend getaways and candlelit dinners? Maybe the poor guy doesn't know how to be romantic and create passion. She should teach him what turns her on. .i; Montreal: Great sex doesn't last forey- 1 er, but real love does. Dropping a partner ; when things go wrong doesn't solve any^; thing. That kind of thinking is immature. Marriages based on sexual impulses are sure to fail. '.' •'» Elmira, N.Y.: Did that unfulfilled woman in Santa Clarita try sex manuals, • massages, lingerie, X-rated movies and. mood music before giving up? I recom-, mend them. I Houston: My advice to "Lucky but • Confused" is DON'T DO IT! I've been mar, i ried for 15 years, but I've always known i something was missing. I thought I could make it work, but I was wrong. Passion • cannot be learned. Either you have it, or' you don't. I cannot bear the thought of go- • ing through the rest of my life without being crazy about a man in bed. He lusts af> ter me, and I fake it. If I had it to do over • again, I would never marry him. ) PBS, Wlchlta-Hutchlnson | ABC, Kansas City BABC, Wichita | CBS, Wichita ——i • — [Q NBC, Kansas City 5/27/98 | PBS, Bunker Hill-Hays | NBC, Wichita FOX, Wlchlta-Sallna | CBS, Topeka Access 6, Salina allna5195 | FOX, Kansas City ipinCity 98282 Spin City 5737 Nanny 1355 Encore IWTBS Qcinemax QDstarz! 1 HBO ^Discovery JCNN Jf/x lAmer.
