Williams Accepts ISU Job Timei Herald, Carroll, la. Wednesday, March 24, 1976 14 AMES, Iowa (AP) — "The challenge of being in the Big Eight Conference and being with one of the finest educational institutions in the nation," has lured West Des Moines Dowling Coach Jim Williams to a football assistant's job at Iowa State University —again. He accepted the job Tuesday of coaching Cyclone offensive linemen, succeeding Tom Backhus who had left the staff to become an assistant at Wisconsin. Williams, 42. was also Dowling's athletic director and had long been considered a prime college coaching prospect. The appointment to the ISU staff was effective immediately. In 12 years his Maroons won 105 games, lost nine and tied one. He took over the Dowling job in 1964 and never lost a Des Moines Metropolitan Conference game, winning 56 straight. The Maroons once had a 47-game victory string against all opponents. He previously coached at East Dubuque, 111., and at Audubon high schools. His career coaching record is 181-21-3. "It is with a great amount of excitement that I join what I believe is one of the fine football programs in the country," Williams said. "I'm looking forward to my association with Earle Bruce and his staff and hope I will be able to make a positive contribution to the success of the program." Bruce, who had previously tried to lure Williams from the high school ranks, said he was delighted with the appointment. "We are very pleased to have a man of Jim Williams' caliber, stature and background join our program," said Bruce, who is beginning his fourth season at the Cyclone helm. "He is the most successful high school coach in Iowa and one of the top coaches in the country. We believe he will add much to our offensive football team and total program." Williams had been hired by Bruce as an offensive assistant in 1974, only to have the Dowling coach change his mind after reportedly serving one day on the job. It was also mentioned that Williams in recent months had been offered an assistant coaching job at the University of Iowa. Bruce will apparently continue serving as his own offensive coordinator. Last week he named incoming assistant coach Pete Rodriguez as his defensive coordinator. Williams' primary responsi- blity will be the offensive line, which was hit hard by graduation. Rebuilding the offensive line is considered a major objective by Bruce. Williams is a Clinton native. He attended Emporia State College in Kansas before graduating from the University of Northern Iowa where he earned all-North Central Conference honors in football and basketball. In 1969 he was named Iowa's prep coach of the year. While the talks between the players' union and the club owners resume in New York today, they will be shunted aside — unless unanticipated progress is made — as the true baseball fan finally gets his long-awaited supply of hits, runs and errors. Meanwhile, free agent pitcher Andy Messersmith doesn't seem to be as popular as he once was with teams seeking his services. The world champion Cincinnati Reds said Tuesday they have turned down a chance to sign the hard-throwing right-hander for $1.5 million over four years. And the Atlanta Braves said they would withdraw their offer if Messersmith doesn't make a decision soon. But Messersmith's agent, Herb Osmond, said he expected the pitcher to sign a million-dollar pact within a week. The Reds disclosed they rejected a proposal to give Messersmith a bonus and a four- year, no-cut contract. "To sign him under these terms is poor business," said Bob Howsam, club president. "No club in our industry can truly afford this and survive."
