Where do they grow? * * * ANSWER: Also called the bottle tree, the Baobob is notable for its barrel-like trunk that often grows to be 30 •feet in diameter. The tree grows no' more than 70 feet high and the branches form a dome-like mass that often is 150 feet in diameter. Individual branches are as thick as the trunks of other large trees and may reach SO feet in length. The leaves are similar to those of the horse chestnut tree and the flowers are huge and white. The tree produces a large gourd-like, woody fruit - called Monkey Bread by the Africans. It has a pleasantly acid pulp, which is eaten or made into a cooling drink. A native of tropical Africa, the Baobob also is cultivated in India, Australia and Florida. The African natives formerly used the leaves and bark for medicine. A fiber from the bark is now used in papermaking and for weaving ropes and cloth. The strange shaped trunk gave .rise to the Arabian legend that the devil pulled up the Baobob, threw its branches into the ground and left its roots in the air. 3-24 (Kevin C. Decision is Delayed on Translators DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Money appropriated for translators to beam educational television to areas of the state that do not receive it might better be spent on higher-powered transmitters, a member of the State Educational Radio and Television Board said Tuesday. The Iowa Legislature has appropriated $500,000 for the translators, which are low-powered devices that pick up a television signal, amplify it and retransmit it to a limited area. They are used to supplement transmitters. "The question is, wouldn't you do better with two more transmitters than seven translators," said William Quarton, a board member and retired Cedar Rapids broadcasting executive.. A recent study showed that . seven translators would be needed to reach areas in northwest, northeast, southeast and southern Iowa that cannot pick up the Iowa Educational Broadcasting Network signal. They study recommended translators be placed hear Rock Rapids, Sibley, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Keosauqua. Ottumwa and Dubuque. <> "There's been another increase in our cost-of-substandard- living!"
