"I get bored easily and I'm bored with what I've been doing and it's time for a change," Sheen said in a statement read by publicist Jeff Ballard. "I'm looking forward to embracing life again." Sheen will spend a month at the Promises rehabilitation center in Malibu. The 32-year-old star of "Platoon" and "Wall Street" was discharged Friday from Los Robles Regional Medical Center, where he was being treated for a drug overdose. Sheen then checked into an unspecified drug rehabilitation center, but he walked out early Saturday morning. ;' Schiffer gets a new gown BEIRUT, Lebanon — Claudia Schiffer's newest frock is a traditional Lebanese robe, which the Middle Eastern country's president gave the German supermodel Sunday as a souvenir. Schiffer was in Lebanon for a fashion show. After posing for a photo with President Elias Hrawi and his family, Schiffer was given a blue abaya, a traditional Lebanese robe, and a silver tray engraved with a cedar of Lebanon, the national symbol. Schiffer is the latest of many celebrities to visit Lebanon since the end of the 197590 civil war, as the country tries to restore its status as the Arab world's entertainment and commercial hub. Carrey looking to break out NEW YORK — Just like his character in "The Truman Show," Jim Carrey wants to break out of the role assigned to him. "To me, it's the saddest thing in the world to see a comedian at 60 doing the same character and the same act," Carrey says in the latest Time magazine. Better known for the broadly comic "Ace Ventura" movies, Carrey plays the unwitting star of "The Truman Show," where the woman he thinks is his wife — and everybody else — are CARREY actually actors teaming up to convince him his fictional "life" is real. "In my best scenario, I want to turn out to be Truman Burbank," Carrey says. "I want to turn out to be the guy who won't let himself be caged but still has hope and faith in people, and life." > From Wire Service Reports Invitations mark milestones, aren't gift requests Dear Ann Landers: It's that time of year again when children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews get the urge to hit up defenseless relatives for gifts. I am talking ahout graduations, marriages and births of babies. I cannot understand the parents of these high school and college students who allow them to send out invitations and announcements indiscriminately. I have five grown children, and none of them ever sent a "gimme note." It especially is embarrassing now that I have a limited income and feel fortunate if there is any money left over at the end of the month. I feel obligated to send something because I don't want the parents to think ill of me. — Tapped Out in California ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. Dear Tapped: Apparently, you need permission to stop viewing announcements as requests for gifts. I'm giving it to you. Many announcements are sent simply because friends and family members want you to know of the milestone or achievement. No gift is expected, and you need feel no obligation to send one. A brief note of congratulations is adequate. Dear Ann Landers: You recently reran your column on Reconciliation Day, asking readers to reach out to friends and family members with whom they have had difficulties and were no longer speaking. I hope you won't run it again. This is what happened in my family. My brother and I never did get along, even when we were youngsters. I was the pesky little sister. In our teenage years, he never liked me because I always beat him at tennis. We attended the same college, and I was a year behind him. When I TV TONIGHT made Phi Beta Kappa (he didn't), he was so upset, he told my folks the reason I was voted into that select society was because I slept with the professors. To make matters worse, I married a great guy, and my personality-challenged brother has had three divorces at last count. As you might suspect, we never really were close, so I had pretty much ignored him. When I read your column on reconciliation, I decided to give it another try and extend the olive branch. I phoned him. The first words out of his mouth were "I haven't heard from you in two years. You can go to hell." Then, he hung up on me. So much for "reconciliation." When relatives are estranged, it's probably for a good reason. Please, Ann, mind your own business. — Houston, Texas Dear Houston: Sorry my suggestion was a bummer for you. I now am going through my mail, hoping to find a won- derful reconciliation story. When I find a beauty, I will print it. Dear Ann Landers: A couple of years ago, you printed a poem for Memorial Day that I found very touching. Would you please run it again for those who missed it the first time? — Vet in Virginia Dear Vet: With pleasure. That moving tribute to our veterans was written by John T. Bird of Birmingham, Ala. Here it is: "Last Monday in May" We pause to remember those who died With so much courage, So much pride. They'll never come back, But memories endure To remind us of freedom: fragile, pure. We're worthy of their sacrifice If we pause each day Not just on the last Monday in May - 5/25/98 OPBS, Bunker HIII-Havs |t| NBC, Wichita ^PFOX.
