Answer to Previous Puzzle QUESTION: they live. I would like to know about squid and how ACROSS 1 Explosive device 5 Poisonous snakes 9 Light cigar 10 Capital of Nigeria 12 Naval officer 14 Recent 16 As well as 17 Ensnarer's gadget 18 Candlenut tree 19 Irish specialty 91 _^_ ..._ extra cost 22 Twitching 23 Comparative suffix 24 Air (comb, form) 26 Dog's name 27 Highly intricate 31 Cluster 33 Raison d' 34 Female horse ANSWER: The squid is a member of the group of animals 35 While called mollusk. Members of this group include snails, clams and other animals without a backbone and enclosed in a shell. The squid, however, has an internal- shell - feather-shaped and made of boney material. Squid range in size from one inch to the giant Archi- teuthis which can be more than 60 feet long (including the tentacles) and weigh about 1,000 pounds. Most squid have elongated tubular bodies, a triangular fin on each side of .the rear of the body, and a short .compact head with large eyes.^AH squid have 10 arms arranged around the mouth. Eight of the arms have two rows of suckers on the inner side. The other two arms are slender longer tentacles with expanded ends that have four rows of suckers. The rims of the suckers are protected by a horny ring which has small teeth. . Squid are found in shallow coastal waters as well as in deep sea waters. They may be fast swimming or may float as part of the drifting sea life..They swim by their rear fins and can also swim backward by forcing jets of water from the body cavity out through their mouth. Squid are meat-eating animals and prey on fish, lobster and shrimp. (Stuart J. Hilwig of Marblehead, Massachusetts wins a prize for this question.
