It Makes Sense to Budget Your Time CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Financial institutions advise, careful budgeting of money. But it also makes sense to budget time, advises the research'division of Pioneer Western Corp., national financial services organization based here. "Putting your time to efficient use is not only important — it is invaluable to career women, housewives and families alike," say the company's analysts, who offer a few time-budgeting tips: Discipline yourself to allot certain periods of time to certain chores and projects. Remember that all work can be creative — given half a chance. To consider work as drudgery is destructive. In planning tasks, give them priorities and deadlines — then stick to them. Put the more difficult first, making sure they get done. Keep a pencil handy at all times. As the thought occurs, jot it down.. Use a typewriter at home — for ideas for the office or just grocery lists. Lump all your shopping Times Herald, Carroll, la. •* •* Wednetday, March 17, 1976 I / IIIIMIItftllMI tftlllllMIIII •IMMMIIt errands together and do them all at once. Cut telephone conversations short. Far too many people expend their energy and time with superfluous chatting: The same applies to callers, both at home and office. Be polite but firm and brief. Visitors can interrupt important tasks. Avoid saying "I haven't got time." If you can't get your important work done in a certain length of time, something is wrong. You are disorganized. Avoid boredom. It's enervating and guarantees your getting nothing done. Tackle big jobs when .you have the most energy. Some people are at their productivity peak in the morning — others in the afternoon. Don't allow yourself to become ensjaved by perfection. It can prevent you from accomplishing all you have to do. —Times Herald News Service Photo Chapter Sweetheart — Mary Giles (left), daughter of the William Giles' of Audubon, and a pupil at Audubon High School, was named the Audubon FFA "chapter sweetheart" by members of the unit at the annual banquet in Audubon. Joni Petersen (right), daughter of the Russell Petersens, was last year's chapter sweetheart. Iowa Bookshelf Edited by Mary Ann Riley SIMPLE JUSTICE. The History of Brown Vs. Board of Education. By Richard Kluger. (Knopf, $15.95) In 1954 the landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court in the case of Brown v. Board of Education marked the beginning of the end of decades of legal segregation in the schools of the United States. Chief Justice Earl Warren announced the decision to a half-empty Court room, saying "We conclude — unanimously — that in the field of public education the doctrine of 'separate but equal' has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." The background of that case — and three related cases—is the subject for this highly interesting and well researched study of black people's struggle for equal righfs in this Country. The first chapter is dynamite. The Rev. Joseph DeLaine, a black minister, was shot at, had his house and church burned, was charged with trumped-up crimes, and became a fugitive for asking for a school bus for colored children. The Chairman of the School Board told them "We ain't got no money to buy a bus for your nigger children," although there was money in Clarendon County, S.C. for thirty buses 4-H Mews The Carroll Jollyettes met March 9, 1976 at the Farm .Bureau Building. Sue Millender led the 4-H pledge and Kathy Behrens led the Pledge of Allegiance. A talk of "Block Printing" was given by Sue Millender, Rachel Roiger, Tami Goetzinger and Denise Lambert. The club will send $15 to the Iowa 4-H United Service Program. Hostesses were Sue Millender, Rachel, Jane and Neysa Roiger. for white children, and black children walked as far as ten miles to school. And, so 'a lawsuit was filed that became one of the four to reach the High Court. The Brown case came from Topeka, Kansas, which simply chose to have a segregated school. The ultimate importance of the Court's decision goes far beyond the schools. It was the most important development of the century in changing the moral climate in^ race relations — the beginning of equal citizenship. No person — black, white, students, teachers, parents, school board members, editors, politicians, or lawyers can profess to enter into an intelligent discussion of today's racial problems — bussing, in particular — without reading this book.—Bennett Webster SEARCHING FOR CALEB. By Anne Tyler. (Knopf $8.95) Readers who claim they haven't time'for fiction because 'it doesn't teach them anything' should skip a simplistic How-To book by some psychologist and try a good novel for a change. This is one. Ms. Tyler presents the main body of characters, old and young, in their sheltered, well-to-do family enclave and then we see them grow older and change, or not change as the case may be. We join the two main characters in their antic romp through life; Duncan is not Everyman nor is Justine Everywoman. He mends carnival machinery and she tells fortunes with cards after their conventional childhood. But in reading about their lives, one is exposed to the infinite variety within each individual. Even given the twin factors of environment and genetic heritage, nobody knows what a given individual will do at a given time and place. As we read about 'whole' people in their fascinating complexity, we find bits and pieces of ourselves. This is the way to gain psychological know-how and it's wrapped in a lively story to boot.—Mary Ann Riley FRlOnUURE CARROLL HARDWARE STORE HARDWARE FRIOIDAIKC rmoiMlRt FOR Prices slashed!
