The Jewelry Business Has Undergone Many Changes . . . by ROY BOYEK, Jeweler The jewelry business has undergone many changes through the past 19 years. 19 years ago I started watch and jewelry repair training under Mr. Daugherty, a private jeweler at Newton, Kansas. The first few months were difficult ones, although at that time most watches were large pocket and wrist watches. Following one year's training, I secured a job at Mace's, one of Topeka's leading jewelry stores. The next 5 years were spent in this store and the training I received there in general and railroad watch reparing I considered very valuable. We returned to Newton where we operated our own store, later going to Marion to manage a jewelry store. During the year 1951 flood waters were in our store 5 different times. This prompted us to make a change and we had a choice of Ottawa or Atchison. We decided to come to Ottawa and I worked at Madtson's for about 2& years. In 1954 we purchased Newfield's Jewelry and continued to operate at the old location until our recent move to our present location just north of Scott's Store in the south half of the former Fred Kaiser Drug Store. Needless to say, we have been very happy we came to Ottawa instead of going to Atchison. As in any business, old methods are replaced by new ones to keep up with the fast pace of today's living. To serve you better, we now have the latest electronic cleaning and timing machine; also, an engraving machine to personalize gifts or mark items for ready identification. Our latest acquisition being a stamping machine to personalize leather goods, pens, cards and many other items in this category. This machine is complete with many sizes and styles of type, plus many stamps for clubs and fraternal organizations. With the above equipment, together with many new hand tools, we feel we can offer you the best service obtainable anywhere on all makes and models of watches from the newest automatic to the smallest ladies' watch. The newest watches on the market are the Hamilton and Bulova electronic watches which operate on tiny batteries with no mainsprings or winding gears in either watch. They keep exceptionally accurate time. We have had many interesting experiences through the years, some funny, a few embarrassing . , . like the man's watch we completely overhauled and before the month was over it had stopped. Not too long ago, a lady stopped by to leave her watch for repair. In searching for it she emptied her purse on top of the counter and went through the contents piece by piece, Frantically, she sent her husband back to the car, which was parked about a block away, to see if it had fallen out on the seat. After the husband returned with no watch, I got a glimpse of a watch on the lady's arm. I asked her if she had two watches and when she said she did not, I called attention to the one on her arm. One of the most interesting experiences we have had with watches was the one an elderly man at Marion brought in to us for repair after it had been lost and buried in the low grounds along the river for 60 years. The watch was a graduation gift from his father when he finished high school. Would you believe it, the watch only needed cleaning and a new crystal. Drop in anytime and look around in our expanded gift department. You will be amazed at our variety of items from a 5c card to an expensive watch or diamond. Also, may we take this opportunity to thank our many friends and customers for our success the past 7 years and trust we can now serve you better. Adv. "That's Right, Mr. Farmer . . .
