Gene Shalit, a "Today" regular since January 1973, came to the position via being a book and movie reviewer, sports-writer and general-interest columnist. Shalit was on the show periodically starting in 1969 as book reviewer. In 1973, he got full-time work when Joe Garagiola left the show. Shalit was born in New York but grew up in New Jersey and Urbana, 111. He was graduated from the University of Illinois. I -V :,.'f Gene Shalit first appeared on "Today" in 1969, Q. John Wesley Shipp, who created the role of Kelly Nelson in February 1980, is a graduate of Butler High School in Louisville and Indiana University. Before getting the "Guiding Light" role, he had walk-ons on "One Life to Live" and "All My Children." Shipp had a regular role on CBS' "On Our Own" series. He recently recorded an album. The 6-foot-1 -inch actor weighs 170 pounds. He lives in New York and enjoys basketball, bowling, tennis, volleyball, swimming and water skiing.
