Gene Shalit, a "Today" regular since January 1973, came to the position via being a book and movie reviewer, sports-writer and general-interest columnist.

Shalit was on the show periodically starting in 1969 as book reviewer. In 1973, he got full-time work when Joe Garagiola left the show. The 6-foot-1 -inch actor weighs 170 pounds.
