QUESTION: What is Scrimshaw'' * * * ANSWER: The origin of the word scrimshaw is obscure but the term was widely used by American whalemen during the days of sailing ships. Scrimshaw was the art of carving useful and decorative objects from whales teeth and sometimes walrus teeth and bones. The search for whales was sometimes long and tedious, and many sailors pccuriied their leisure hours practicing their carving skills. The art of the "scrims- handlers", as the practitioners of the craft were referrred to. quite often reflected the harsh life of the whaling men. Scenes depicting whaling ships and men in Jong boats engaged in mortal combat with huge whales were common themes, some crudely etched, others superbly crafted works of art. ..The late President John F. Kennedy was an ardent collector of scrimshaw, several pieces of which were kept prominently displayed on his desk in the White House.
