'•" He'll close his gourmet foods • and gift shop, Koch's House, 155 N. Broadway, as soon as the last of !. his inventory and fixtures sell — : most likely within a month. } "Salina has become a fast food, discount store town," Koch said. •.; "Specialty stores have run their •;, course." i:; Koch said he has modified the ^store's inventory several times -over the years in hopes of attracting more customers, with mixed ^results. The store carries gourmet ,;coffees and teas, copper, brass, ; pewter collectables, ceramics, -stoneware, bath products and holiday-related items. ' "I'm not saying that the change Tjs all bad," he said. "But the at- .Vmosphere for home-owned spe- ^'cialty-type businesses isn't there 'anymore. If you look around, shop ••after shop in Salina has given it up in the past few years." • Koch, 61, and his wife, Sharon, opened the store in a two-story house adjacent to' their liquor '> 'store 15 years ago. He said he will v keep the liquor store open, though he has no current plans for the Koch's House building. „ "The store thrived for 10 of the ".• .15 years," he said. "But lately, it's ; just not enough to make it profitable to continue running it." , His wife's failing health has taken more of his time lately, he said. • With one less store to worry • about, he can spend more time with her, Koch said. "I'm a perfectionist," he said. "It's all or nothing with me. I can't "run things the way I want to, so I won't run it at all." Graham, Travis Graham, Brandon C.
