PRINCETON 63 xoiip," McGuire said. "All ynu have to do is favor No. 30 (Claude Virden) and No. 12 (Jimmy Young). We never start off with our bread-and-butter defense.

We always open with some off-beat defense." Murray coach Cal Luther didn't think Marquette was the best team his Racers met this season. "They've got a very fine club, but Kansas is equally as good or better and so are Morehead and Western Kentucky from our Ohio Valley." Still, Luther gives Marquette a good shot at upending "I've seen Kentucky several times and Marquette's got an excellent chance." the Murray coach claimed. "Marquette's stronger on the boards and I think their multiple defense will give UK trouble." Reviewing the loss, Luther said the shoulder injury that sidelined two-year starting guard Don Funneman hampered his team's hopes for an upset. "Funneman would have made a helluva difference," Luther declared. "He's our best defensive player and lie would have been a big help in our press." Funneman suited up for the game, but didn't see action.

McGuirc said Virden, whose 17-point total was six under his season's average, "probably is the finest shooter we've played against all year. "Murray had played two great games and I didn't think it was possible for them to stay up for a third straight game," McGuire added. "They maybe peaked out and we were waiting in the aisle." Sometimes it's not too easy to keep a straight face when you're conducting an interview with Marquette basketball coach Al McGuirc. For instance, after his power had conquered Murray 82-62 yesterday in a first-round game of the NCAA Mideast Regional, a reporter asked McGuirc if he thought senior forward George Thompson had turned in typical performance. All Thompson had done was drill in 23 points, including 10 crucial ones during a three-minute stretch when Murray threatened in the second half. "No, George didn't have an average game," said McGuire. "He forced two shots we don't take five or six bad shots a year and 1 was surprised to see George force two.

"Now, I'm just talking from a coaching standpoint," added the fiery Marquette coach. "George Thompson paved my driveway and paid my insurance premiums. 1 honestly believe that hc should have received some recognition on the All-American team. "We've finished our third straight 20-win season. That's the hat trick, and George has been invaluable to us." Time to Jump When the subject of the interview switched to Marquette's upcoming game at Madison, Thursday against Kcn- lucky, McGuire said: "I'm real pleased to get an opportunity to play against coach Adoiph Rupp again.

I think my boys will be sky high for the game. We'll be jumping a little bit higher Thursday." McGuire made headlines last March when his team was clobbered 107-89 in the Mideast Regional semifinal. He complained about having to play at UK's Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, the site of the tournament. He argued about which team should occupy the bench that customarily goes to the home team. "I honestly respect coach Rupp," McGuirc insisted.

"It's like being a brick layer. I'm not trying to knock somebody out of a job. I just want to build a better house. And coach Rupp has built some good houses." How does McGuire compare his current team, sporting a 23-4 won-lost record, with the Warriors of last year? Never Look Ahead "Last year's club was better," he replied. "I thought we could go to Los Angeles for the confrontation of the NCAA final four.

This team has more talent, but we were smoother and looked like we were coached last year." Although McGuire had assistant Hank Raymonds watch Murray's last two games, the Marquette boss said he hasn't had Kentucky scouted. "I never look ahead," McGuire stated simply. Scouting the game for Kentucky were Baldy Gilb, former coach at Lexington Henry Clay High, and current Henry Clay coach Al Prewitt. Their report to Rupp will show that Marquette is a quick team that relishes cutting moves on offense that result in baskets from within five feet of the goal. Against Murray, Marquette made good use of the fast break and switched from a man-to-man to zone defense in the first Why did Marquette go to the zone?
