All 23 Colonels players, including 6-9 Wilbert Frazier, acquired from Houston during the off-season in a trade for Kendall Rhine, will report Sept. 16 and Rhodes will have until the first regular season game to trim his roster to 12.

Seven exhibition games have been set for this fall (the Colonels played four a year ago) beginning against the Pacers at Southport, Oct. 1. Other exhibitions will be Oct. 3 against New Orleans at Boonville, Oct. 5 against New Orleans at Hopkinsville, Oct.

Beau Brummel $3.20 and $2.80, and North Flight $19. St.

breezed 35-7 last night in the season opener for both teams. By LOU YOUNKIN Courier-Journal I Times Staff Writer The Kentucky Colonels, whose lack of depth and size had them on the ropes virtually all last season, will find out whether they have the problems licked beginning Monday. That's when the American Basketball Association club's 13 rookies and a few veterans who can't wait begin two-a-day workouts in Masonic Home Gym. Coach Gene Rhodes' Colonels apparently won't have any problems at guard, where high-scoring Darel Carrier (22.9 average in 1967) and Louie Dampier (20.7) are likely to again win starting positions. Behind them are such players as holdover Bobby Rascoe and rookies Bo Wyenandt of Vanderbilt and 6-foot-6 Wayne Chapman of Western Kentucky, the Ohio Valley Conference's Player of the Year in 1967-68.

It's what's up front that counts and that's where the Colonels were lacking last season as they struggled through the year in last place in the Eastern Division before making the playoffs on the last game of the regular season. And it's up front where the Colonels concentrated when it came to drafting players for the 1968-69 campaign. Among the rookies who will report for physicals Monday before starting right in on the practice court are 6-9 Gene Moore of St. Louis, 6-9 Al Dixon of Bowl- ing Green, 6-8 Willie Davis of North From AP and Special Dispatches "She broke running, I sat back and took a hold and she did it all herself. I just didn't think it could be that easy." So said jockey Eddie Belmonte as he alighted yesterday from the King Ranch filly, Gallant Bloom, following her nine-length runaway in the $100,806 Matron Stakes at Aqueduct.

The daughter of Gallant Man, trained by; veteran Max Hirsch, sped the six furlongs in 1:10 25 to earn $62,634 in the test for juvenile fillies which was inaugurated in 1892. Mrs. H. C. Phipps' Irradiate, ridden by? Larry Adams, was second and Meadow Stable's favored Queen's Double, with Johnny Rotz aboard, finished third in the field of six.

Tve never had such an easy stakes rate," said Belmonte. "I rode her just like Mr. Hirsch said 'take a little hold on her and don't let her have her Increases Lead Steadily Gallant Bloom, who won the filly division of the National Stallion Stakes at Belmont in June but stopped badly in the Sorority at Monmouth and the Spin-way at Saratoga, raced to a three-length lead after a quarter-mile. She opened it four at the half and to eight in the stretch. Irish Dude Wins 'Buckeye of Cheiron, owned by Berg, covered the mile 1:42 15 to pay $85.20, The daughter Marion H.

Taylor's favored Irish Dude, with Sandino Hernandez up, captured the $26,700 Governor's Buckeye Cup yesterday before 7,811 fans who wagered $619,720 on the final racing program of the season at River Downs. Irish Dude, a 4-year-old son of Seaneen from a Johns Joy mare, Ever Beautiful, Dark Stream, an entry with Star Nell, was second at $9.60 and $4.40, and favored Miss Ribot, owned by P.

Elmendorf FENTRESS TACKLE SHOP carried top weight of 128 pounds in the 1 116-mile feature. King's Scepter was second and Bol 'N Jac third. The winner paid $3.40, $2.60 and $2.40 with King's Scepter worth $9.40 and $5.20. Bol 'N Jac paid $3.80. Irish Dude previously had won the Cincinnati Special and the Southern Ohio Handicap at River Downs this year.

A track record of 52 seconds flat for 4'2 furlongs on the turf was established in the ensuing Turf Speed Handicap by Calibrator, a 4-year-old son of Judge J. B. Barrie B. was second and Ponce de Leon third. 3117-19 S.

ATLANTIC CITY' Mrs. Albert Low-enthal's Tearing Around won the $29,825 World's Playground Stakes by 2Vz RUDYMOLTER'S GOLF CENTER on Poplar Level Road FOR THE PRICE OF Farm's Skookum was third in the six-furlong race for 3-year-olds, which was timed in 1:10.

Bill Hartack was aboard Baffle, leading from the start until Bo Rama ruined his bid in the stretch under Wayne Harris. Bo Rama paid $27.80, $8.20 and $4.80, Baffle $3 and $2.40, and Skookum $3.40. LINCOLN DOWNS Rabbit's Foot found a muddy racing strip to his liking after breaking last in a field of eight and won the $7,500 Warwick Handicap at the Rhode Island track. The winner, owned by Russell Buck, picked up ground steadily and then out-dueled Double Major and Naughty Jester in the stretch to score a half-length victory in 1:29 25 for the seven furlongs. Double Major hung on for second, three-quarters of a length in front of Naughty Jester, the 4-5 favorite as an entry with Power of Destiny.

Rabbit's Foot paid $15.80, $7 and $2.60, Double Major S9.20 and $3.40, and the entry returned $2.20. Latonia Meet's Texas State, 6-8 Bob Zoretich of DePaul and 6-8 Manny Leaks of Niagara. Kaufman the Little Man Again Also in the running for front court berths manned most of the time last year by 6-10 center Jim Caldwell and 6-7 forwards Randy Mahaffey and Jim (Goose) Ligon will be A. W. Davis of Tennessee, John Snipes of Elizabeth City (N.

and Joe Gallagher of Pembroke. All three are 6-7. A. W. Davis, who hasn't played basketball for two years since leaving Tennessee, has still been around it.

He coached a new high school team in Tennessee and had a 49-15 won-lost record. The smallest man in the rookie camp will be 5-10 Butch Kaufman, but he's used to that. The Louisville St. Xavier graduate went to Western Kentucky without a scholarship, but he quickly earned one and became a star. He just has his sights set higher now (quite a bit higher), that's all.

The rookies will play two games against the rookies of the Indiana Pacers next weekend in what is believed to be the first series of its kind in history. The two rookie squads will meet Friday night in Harry, Bishop Set Record As DeSales Captures Relay Special to The Courier-Journal INDIANAPOLIS Tim Harry and Joe Bishop won in course-record time of 30 minutes, 19 seconds in leading Louisville DeSales' cross-country team to the intermediate division title in the six-mile Pike Invitational Relay here yesterday. Jack Sivori and Tom Strong took third for DeSales, Ron Green and Al Metzler sixth, Gary Lile and Joe Fadell 11th and Sammy Green and Ronnie Pontrich 17th. DeSales had 21 points and West Lafayette was second with 40.

Louisville St. Xavier was sixth in the intermediate division, which was comprised of teams from larger schools. DeSales will hold its invitational cross-country meet Saturday. Teams from Indiana and Kentucky will participate. Range Balls for Driving, Range Practice Or Games of Miniature Golf THROUGH SEPTEMBER Sandra Haynie Shoots 68, Leads Ladies Golf Tourney EUGENE, Ore.

Phipps Horses Go for Triple, Wiml Up Without a Victory Some days you just can't win for losing or so it must appear to Mrs. Henry Carnegie Phipps and her grandson, Ogden Mills (Dinny) Phipps. The Phipps family, which hardly has any peers when it comes to thoroughbred racing, has certainly had its big days.

Yesterday, however, wasn't one of them. Mrs. Phipps, owner of Wheatley Stable, stood to score a gigantic racing double if her 1-5 favorite, King Emperor, could win the Arlington-Washington Futurity at Chicago and her promising 2-year-old filly, Irradiate, could take the rich Matron at New York. And grandson Dinny stood to make it a family triple if his favored Beau Brummel could win the World's Playground at Atlantic City. None of the trio won, but there was consolation.

All three finished second. STATE VEHICLE INSPECTION STATION 4601 LOUISVILLE AVE. AT TULULAH 3-y-o; 6 Prde Lord Barcn 6-3 (2 blki. Wilt of Crittenden Dr. between Watt.
