There -will be a small admis- •ion charge for the benefit of the Mitchell county polio fund, but any one who crosses their thresh- hold and takes a jaunt into modern living feels almost like contributing again on the way out. Mr. Blandin also supervised the selection of the furnishings and the coloring to go with this home and it is completely harmonious throughout. Not often does a designer have the co-o'peration the Biederrnans gave Mr. Blandin. But they mmm+- in turn have found that it has paid them well. The Biederrnans were farmers, having moved to a place 12 miles northwest of Osage in the early '20s, about a year after Mr. Biederman was graduated from Iowa State College at Ames. They liked farming, and found that it offered a substantial living while rearing their family. Today their son, Wilbur, is on the farm. Another son, Robert, is with the federal crop department, Des Moines, and their daughter, Mrs. Marion Spodnick lives in Connecticut. The Biedermans felt that they were ready to retire and build a home in Osage. On Maple Street .Maple street, ifj anyone is familiar with the trees around Osage, would be the logical location. They contacted Mr. Blandin and he went to work with them to get exactly what they wanted. That was in July, 1948. The home has just been completed. Flowers in Sidewalk Rectangular flower boxes sunken in the entrance sidewalk are an original touch of Mr. Blandin's. A large wall of fluted opaque glass is a pleasing adjunct to a tunning front entrance. The door is a slab, designed with little windows and Weltex pattern, the work of a cabinet maker. At the front entrance a finishing touch is the intercommunication system which enables the caller to speak' with the occupants anywhere in the house. Upon admission you realize that the gay vestibule has direct access to the bedroom, wing on the west, the living room and study on the south, and the dining and kitchen wing on.the east. A pleasing feature of the living room is that it is not a passage way to the other rooms, and it is outstanding for its livability. Part of the north wall of the dining room is formed by the large sheet of fluted glass noted at the entrance. It gives the room a light airy feeling without exposure to the outside. A stunning walnut buffet in graduated form is built along the north wall. The floor, a continuation of the entry floor, is of light gray Carthage cut stone from Missouri, and adds an informal and different touch. Smoky Green Walls Walls in the dining room are of smoky green, the ceiling of oyster white. The dining table and chairs are of white birch. A novel fluted flexible walnut screen accents the room.
