Communists Active as Mexico'si SlumsMultiply By Vicente Morales MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) — In.front of the cardboard and scrap wood shack, three men strummed guitars and sang the words of '• a song'that has become popular in Mexico! City's numerous squattertowns. "How sad my people are. living in houses of cardboard ... how happy live the dogs in the house of the exploiter," go the Words. No one knows who. wrote the song but many ; are singing it in the shahtytowns that have sprung up on privately owned or government land. ''They're fighting," said Francisco de la Cruz, a self-professed Marxist who is the leader of an organization he says is active in most of the 585 shantytowns or "lost cities" ringing the capital, as they do in many Latin American cities. "The insurrection of the poor people is knocking at the Time* Herald, Carroll, Ib. A Wednesday, March 10, 1976 T iiMniiimtfflmitMmltfllllliinttnffiMiMml door," he said. "We can't wait for a government that serves capitalism to help us." De la Cruz and some of his aides made it clear that they think communism is the only way Mexico's slum problem will be solved. De la Cruz's organization^' set up in brigades, has established learning centers for slum children who do not attend public schools. The children get heavy doses of Marxist doctrine. Tots there shoot clenched fists into the air and chant leftist slogans in unison. Names of slum streets, which look more like narrow dirt alleyways, sometimes bear the names of prominent Communist leaders — Che Guevara, Ho Chi Minh, Fidel Castro and others. The commission met here and discussed the diagonal highway issue. Diagonal highways are opposed by some farmers because they chop up usable land, taking parts of it out of production. The commission Tuesday said that in implementing the highway policy, the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is to make minimal use of diagonal highways. But the policy does not preclude use of them when they serve the best overall purpose. The diagonal road most recently under fire from farmers is 1-380 between Cedar Rapids and Waterloo. Several routes for that highway have been explored, the commission said. The commission decided to conduct a feasability study on a route that would partly run along what is now a railroad bed. The Illinois-Central Railroad is proposing to abandon part of that railway. . ; Victor Preisser, director of the DOT. said if that route could be used, it would be precedent setting; '•" PI-ANO Tuning & repair Now scheduling for MARCH For quick service call Gary Linder 653-7531 Manning. 14-42-1U COOK & BLESSINGTON PAINTING 40' and 50' Aerial trucks High pressure.,washer FREE ESTIMATES Call: Mark Cook Wall Lake 664-2146 . or Jim Blessington Breda 673-2641 CARPENTER WORK WANTED All types remodeling — kitchens, baths and basement rec rooms.
