Machine wash- MoneyBelnMed High School Pupils Buy Kidney Machine CHICAGO (AP) — From the sadness and concern of a group of suburban *-high school pupils over the deatti of a classmate, a kidney patient at Cook County Hospital is being kept alive by a blood cleaning unit converted from an old ^washing machine. The makeshift kidney machine was officially presented Thursday to the hospital on behalf of the Denise Cohen Memorial Foundation, a group found ed by youths at Niles Township High School, northwest of Chicago. Miss Cohen died of a kidney ailment in July 1967. She was 16 and was enrolled at Niles Township at the time of her death. The unit was converted from a wringer-type washer by Dr. George Dunea, acting chairman of the hospital's renal diseases department. It is equipped with a $650 blood pump bought by the youths, who obtained the washer from a clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, and rented a truck to transport it to Chicago. The machine operates on the same principle as the $3,500 to $5,000 artificial kidneys used by other hospitals. "Our machine works as well as the larger machine and much less expensively," Dunea said. Students at Niles Township raised $1,000 for the foundation though bake sales, a theater benefit and a folk singing festival. The apparatus has been at the hospital for about a month, purifying the blood of a 25-year-old mother awaiting a kidney transplant operation. Speakeasies In 1930, Mayor Fiorello La- Guardia of New York estimated that there were 22,000 speakeasies operating in that city. In 1925, the Anti-Saloon League of Iowa stated: "Dubuque boasts of 41,000 citizens and 1,000 bootleggers," according to the Encyclo paedia Britannica.
