He collaborated with Johnny Mercer in writing songs and made several films. The melody of "And the Angels Sing" came from a Romanian tune, Elman said, and originally was released as an instrumental, "Fralich in Swing," in 1938. The lyrics were added later by Mercer, he said.

In a 1961 interview, Elman described his style as being different than jazz because "you know what song you're playing." "I've won quite a few awards as a jazz Jtrumpet player, but I don't class myself 'as a jazz trumpeter," he explained. "I still rely on tone, melodic playing." He spoke the idiom of jazz. When he "was found at a Long Beach club in 1958 rehearsing to open a new act after being reported as missing for several days, he asked: "What's all this jazz that I'm missing? I've never played better in my life." His funeral will be Sunday. Survivors include a son, Martin J. of Van Nuys, and two brothers, Sam Finkle- 'man of New Haven, and Irving Finkleman of New Orleans.
