Or a Canadian League squad. Or a Hollywood "producer. "I've been in four movies," says the Kentucky Trackers' No. 1 quarterback, another one could be coming up. I've done 'Two-Minute 'Heaven Can Waif and 'North JDailas A bunch of us do all the action sequences.

It's fun. And the monkey is great. We made $200 a day. That's $1,000 a week. "The money's there.

But that's a business that can be just as frustrating as football." "Football and frustration have gone together like Roger Staubach and touchdown passes for Alvin White during the -last four years. He has been with the twice, the Saints twice, the Oilers once. Each time he was placed on waivers. He has been with the California Sun of the World Football League. The league folded.

Twice he has been with a California semipro team. For the last years, he was with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. After breaking his wrist early last season, he started the last five games for a team that finished with a 4-16 record. This year, new owners decided to I clean house. The 26-year-old White was (one of the casualties.

i Then, while back home in Newport Beach, he got a call from the fTrackers. It wasn't exactly the Raiders 'or the Rams, but it was enough for him. He is not ready to give up. already have' made it. "If I was that good, I would be playing someplace," says White, who started at Oregon State for two years.

"I know I have things to learn. But I know I can play in the NFL. If I didn't think so I wouldn't be here now. "My thinking is that I've spent four years of high school, four years of college, and four years since in football. That's 12 years of my life dedicated to football.

I'd be a fool to let those years go by the wayside when I'm still physically able to play." If football doesn't work, however, there's always Hollywood. "You just have to show up," he says, "and you don't have to worry about getting injured." White was introduced to movie work after the WFL's Sun folded in 1975. A producer from Universal Studios talked with Tom Fears, the Sun's deposed coach. "They needed 35 players for some football action stuff, so we went," says White. That was for "Two-Minute Warning." When filming of "Semi-Tough" began a year later, the call went out for 16 of the same players to get to Dallas.

"We went in two vans from California," he says. "We didn't want to stay in a hotel so we could save more money. So we asked the guy in charge at the Cotton Bowl if we could stay in the locker room down there. He said OK. We had a good time." But more than anything, Alvin White longs for a good time on a football field when he is not playing a fictitious quarterback in a movie.

He wants it when he is playing himself. "I don't look at it as lowering myself," says White, who will start his second straight game as the Trackers play host to the Texas Charros tonight at 8 p.m. at Fairgrounds Stadium. "Sure, I'm not making the money I was in Canada and I'm not playing in front of 50,000 people. But I still get excited.

"My feeling is that if you sit around and wait, you just get rusty. You're not throwing to receivers, you're not throwing to defensive backs. So I thought this was a great opportunity. This way, if I get a call, I'm ready." White says the Trackers understand that he may not stay with the team long. "The feeling from them up front is that I can go when I want to go," he says.

"But you know deep down, they don't want you to go." No wonder. White, who joined the Trackers prior to a 27-0 loss to Birmingham on July 4, started last week and was splendid in the team's 41-11 victory over Arkansas. He completed 12 of 24 passes, two for touchdowns as the Trackers improved their record to 2-5. "This team is starting to play together," he says. "When I first got here, each guy was worried about himself.

But in the past two weeks, things have changed. The best way I can describe it is that this team was like a centipede with all of the legs going in different directions." If White is determined to maintain the Trackers' momentum, he is also intent on reaching the NFL or CFL again. "I'm in a position here where I'm helping myself and, at the same time, I'm trying to help the team." Skeptics may suggest that if White were a quality quarterback, he would 15 OTHER BRAND NEW 1979, COUGAR XR-7's Your Your Choice! Wff Cost! wws3sm BRAND NEW 1979 1V10NARCH 2 Dr. E. P.

Few people would consider grueling football practices under a sizzling sun anything like a vacation, but linebacker Jim Kovach says the New Orleans Saints' training camp is a relief, of sorts. Kovach was in medical school at the University of Kentucky last season during his final year of college football. The combination of classes, lab courses and Southeastern Conference competition kept him hopping. He squeezed practice sessions in where they would fit, and he often had to arrange special transportation to catch up with the team for road trips. "It's nice to just exercise the body for a change," he said after a practice session.

He is one of almost a dozen young linebackers trying to earn a spot with the National Football League squad. Their days are filled with morning and afternoon practice sessions, team meetings and reviews. "I brought a couple of books with me, but I haven't had time to pay them much attention," Kovach said. He said his main enemy thus far has been the heat. Since camp opened a week ago, one player has been taken from the field to be cooled down in the training room, and a couple of others have left the practice sessions early under their own steam.

One or two have had to take to the sidelines for a few minutes when temperatures in the mid-908 made them woozy. "We have 60 or so out there. I'm surprised that we haven't had a few more go down," he said. Kovach has worked out a program with UK that will allow him to sandwich medical school between NFL seasons. It's a drawn-out approach that can be hastened only if he fails to make the team.

He said he is seizing the opportunity to play professional football: He hopes to fulfill a lifelong ambition. "I've always played within the realm of athletics, and I've always had these goals that stem way back to when I was just a little kid playing ball and watching TV and getting autographs, just like Associated Press Rookie linebacker Jim Kovach, right, clashes with teammate Mike Otto during a practice session at the New Orleans Saints' camp in Florida. He said the chance to play against the best is more important to him than the money he's earning.

He also said this is the only shot he plans to take. "If I didn't make the team and clear waivers and everything, I'd probably go back home," he said. "It's good to know that I've got a wife and family to fall back on. It's good to know that they're ready and prepared to put me through medical school. "It's knowing that I've got my future after football pretty much solidified.

That alone has been able to give me the attitude that I'm just going out to do the best I can and hopefully help the Saints do a lot better than they have been doing.
