CITYCOUNCILOFTHE CITY OFARCADIA, IOWA MY: David P. Butler, Mayor ATTEST: Art Diers, City Clerk March 4,1976 Poor Showing by Bayh May Benefit Udall DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Birch Bayh's poor showing in Tuesday's Massachusetts Democratic presidential primary may benefit Arizona Congressman Morris Udall — at least in Iowa. A spokesman for Bayh said Tuesday the Indiana Senator would drop out of the running for the presidential nomination after his fifth-place finish in the Massachusetts primary. Udall finished second. "I imagine I will go to the (Democratic) county convention as a Udall supporter," said Tom Jochum, a state representative from Dubuque and Bayh's Dubuque County coordinator. Iowa's Democratic county conventions are Saturday. They are the second step in the Iowa Democratic system to select delegates to the Democratic National Convention, which selects the party's nominee. The current Iowa leader is former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter, who won the support of nearly 28 per cent of the county covention delegates in the January precinct caucuses. Bayh took second in the caucuses with 13 per cent, and it is those delegates the other candidates will be wooing. , "We definitely want to stay together and with one liberal candidate," said Rachel Fulton of Waterloo, a Bayh supporter. She said she thinks Bayh's Waterloo group will either join the Udall forces or go uncommitted.
