Manson Holds Off Amazing Breda Rally By Dennis O'Grady (Sports Editor) FORT DODGE - The. bubble burst on the state's fourth-ranked Class A team, St. Bernard of Breda, here Tuesday night in semi-final round district play. Manson held off an amazing Bobcat fourth quarter rally to end the'Bobcats' 22-game winning streak, 84-80. The Eagles, now 18-3 and runners-up in the Twin Lakes Conference to once-beaten, Twin Rivers of Bode, broke away from a 33-31 halftime lead to open up a 60-41 margin after three quarters. But Breda made a comeback "true of a championship club" as they scored 39 points in the final period only to fall short. St. Bernard, which finishes an excellent season at 22-1,. had their chance of winning the game with time running out. Breda, which trailed by 21 points late in the third quarter and as much as 11 points with 4:34 remaining, tied the game at 78-all with just 35 seconds left on a field goal by Dale Steinkamp. Manson's Jeff Shay went to the free throw line with 29 seconds left, but could only convert one of two tosses to put his club back on top at 79-78. The Bobcats immediately called time-out, but the time-out was unfortunate as Ray Wall's club had none left. So the officials. Vern Keerbs of Churdan and Jim Greene of Grand. Junction, assessed a technical foul on Breda. Reserve Lynn Rosendahl went to the line for the Eagles and missed the technical, but moments later canned two for an 81-78 lead. Shay and Rosendahl later combined for three free throws and it was 84-78 and the Bobcats' managed a meaningless basket with two seconds left by Ken Schettler to close out the game's scoring. "We knew we had no time-outs left." commented a dejected, but a proud Wall afterwards. "We told our kids that we had no time-outs left, but it's just one of those things that happens." continued the highly-successful Bobcat head man. ' "I'm awfully proud of these kids." continued Wall, "for the way they came back." "I definitely feel we were the better club and our kids are gentlemen on and off the court." "We had a successful season." Wall added. "I'm also proud to have coached these kids and that comeback of ours proves tljey are winners regardless of the score." Both clubs had men leave by the foul route — Breda four and Manson two. Going to the sidelines early for the Bobcats were Joe Heim at 6:28 of the final quarter: Marv Pudenz at 2:19: Tim Nieland at 2:08 and Tom Koster at six seconds. Fouling out for Manson. which will meet conference rival Pocahontas, in the district final at Storm Lake Thursday, were Craig Poppen 'with 4:25 remaining and Mike Julius with 1:14 left. Both teams had all five starters scoring in double figures. Shay and Curt Pohl led the winners with 17 each, followed by Mike Miller with 15. Poppen with 14 and Julius with 13. For t he B o b c-a t's . Steinkamp. a junior, and Tlmei Herald, Carroll, la. Wedneiday, March 3, 1976 13 Koster each netted 16 points, followed by Dan Schwabe with 14 and Pudenz and Nieland. another junior, with 12 each. The third quarter was Breda's biggest downfall as Manson twice used 8-0 spurts against Wall's club in . building up their big lead. It happened to be a lead that the Bobcats couldn't make-up.
