Walker of Atchison. An observing man sayB that after a thaw you can toll what merchants are etiergctio and industrious by observing who clean tho snow off their sidewalks and who do not. Tne same observer says merchants who fail to clean oil the bhow lose more custom than they think, because so many people avoid a Blushy, slippery sidewalk. Mr. J.

F. Tufts states that he intends to call up the question with reference to the method employed in selecting jurors in the District Court, tt seems that several days ago the regular panel was exhausted and the court ordered a special venire of seventeen men, of whom the court furnished a list. These were sub-pu-naod by the Sheriff, presumably for the case on trial, but have been permitted to remain on duty ever since, as part of the regular panel. Subsequently a case came up In which Mr. Tufts was interested, and supposing that the jurors had been drawn in the regular way, he per mitted them to serve.

Mr. Tufts thinks, the proceeding was entirely irregular and he will demand a correction. There is very general and, it seems to us, well founded complaint, at Farui-ington, Monrovia, Muscotah, Whiting, and other towns on this end of the Central Branch, about the time table on the road. For lustauce, the morning train arrives at Atchison at 3:25 a. and the evening train at 5:35 p.

passing Muscotah at about 2 a. m. and 4 p. and Elllnghain a little later. If passengers wish to do business in Atohisou they must either gel up In the middle of the night, or, coming in on the evening train, must Btay twenty-four hours, for the passenger trains depart at 10:25 a.

and 10:45 p. in. The people of Muscotah and Eflinghain have, we understand, sent a petition to Superintendent Doddridge, asking that the freight train which ar riveB here at about 0 m. be allowed to carry passengers. Either this petition should be granted, or a local morning morning tram should be put on the roadt arriving here at about 10 a.

and re- turning at 5 or 0 p. m. As we have said, there is just grounds for the complaints made concerning the time table on the Central Branch, and Atchison, as well at the towns weatof this city is interested In htivinff a cbAnge. 'ills FRIDAY and SATURDAY. 27th and 28th inst, 26th, EMBROIDERY creek moved out, and great torrent poured into the Missouri river.

The ice on the river was covered with about four inches of water, but the ice harvesters continued their work. The thaw continued during the night, nnd the indications are that a general breaking up will occur. Mr. McGonigle of Leavenworth, one of the arbitrators ol the loss in the I'nion depot, went to Chicago Friday, and will return Tuesday, when lie and Mr. C.

W. Kenning will complete the work assigned to them. I hose who observed their movements were convinced that they were getting along harmoiiio.isly, and it is believed that they will have no ilillicul- tv in arriviu'; at an agreement. A surveying corps, under the direc tion of City F.uginccr Giddiugs, was engaged yesterday in running levels on Santa Fe street, from Fourth street to tin- city limits, with the view of establishing grades for paving purposes. Levels were also run on South Fifth street, for the sunie purpose.

Cross section levela were also run on Third street, from Coniiiicr-tial street to the railroad tracks. The Dime Savings bank, tho only banking institution In Atchison open Saturdays from (la. in. until II p. paid last evening after 5 p.

The laboring class, as well as the retail merchants, appreciate the advantages offered by this reliable Institution. The jury in tho case of David Snyder against Ira Sickler, in the District Court yesterday, brought in a verdict for the plaintiff. Snyder was formerly employed by Sickler, who gave him an order on man named Parker for the amount due him.

The order was not honored, and Snyder sued Sickler for the full amount with interest, and obtained a verdict accordingly, under the work and labor clause in the statute, which allows no exemption. As a gentleman who works at night was returning from lunch about three o'clock yesterday morning he was attacked by two savage dogs belonging to M. Kudus, proprietor of the St. James hotel. At first ho paid little attention to the ferocious brutes, but when they pounced upon him he realized the necessity of defending himself.

Backing against tho wall he succeeded in kicking them off, hut not until they had nearly ruined a new suit of tailor mude clothes. Such dogs ought to be conftnod or killed. The exercises in the Atchison public schools last Friday, in celebration of Kansas Day, were the most interesting of the present term. In all the schools were appropriate essays, readings, recitations and song, all of which were creditable. In the High school the exercises were especially Interesting.

These included an essay on "Kansas People," by Bert Denton, which was highly complimented by all who heard it, and an original poem on Kansas, by Mary Fisher, a colored girl, in which more than ordinary genius was displayed, both In composition and delivery. The next special exercises will be on Longfellow's birthday. Tuk Champion has recently inter viewed three men, former citizens of AUhison, whose business called them away from this citv to other points. One was compelled to remove to Kansas City because of assignment to new duties; one removed to a thriving town on the T. S.

F. road, and one removed to a Xorthwet-rn Kansas town. These gen tlemen all have families, and receiving fixed salaries, keep a pretly accurate ac count of their expenditures. They lived In Atchison several yeais, and have lived in their new locations from eiirht to fif teen months. Faoh one of them said that the expenses of living In Atchison were from 20 to 30 per cent less than in their new locations.

Hent, fuel, provisions, vegetables, and nearly everything else used or consumed by a family, and constituting a portion of their daily expenditures, are cheaper here than elsewhere. We had heard similar statements made by many persons who observe such farts ar, they travel, but the statements above given are the results of practical experience, and embody facts narrated by men who know what they are talking about Two inch Hamburg embroidery, 1 cent Three inch Hanibury embroidery, 3 cents.
