A/I FRIDAY, MAY 22, 1998 Money THE SALINA JOURNAL V SEAGRAM Seagram to expand its show businesses Distiller to sell Tropicana and focus its holdings in entertainment arena By The Associated Press NEW YORK — Universal Studios owner Seagram is buying PolyGram NV, the world's biggest music company, and shedding its Tropicana juice business to make entertainment the main focus of a company best known for its whisky and vodka. The widely expected deal, announced Thursday, adds Poly- Gram artists such as Elton John, Luciano Pavarotti, Nine Inch Nails and LL Cool J to Seagram's Universal Music Group, already home to stars including Bush, Reba McEntire and B.B. King. It also allows Seagram to leapfrog competing conglomerates Time Warner and Sony in music while balancing its entertainment business amid a long box-office slump. For the first time, the majority of Seagram's business will be show business. "These announcements herald an important transformation of Seagram," said Edgar Bronfman Jr., whose family built the famed liquor company that produces Seagram's V.O. and Chivas Regal whisky, Absolut vodka and Captain Morgan rum. Bronfman brought Seagram into the entertainment industry with the purchase of MCA, now known as Universal Studios, for $5.7 billion in 1995. Seagram plans to sell its entire stake in Tropicana in a public stock offering shortly to help pay for PolyGram. The company expects to gain $3.5 billion to $4 billion from the sale of Tropicana, which it bought for $1.2 billion in 1988. The addition of PolyGram will give Seagram annual revenue of about $18 billion. T VIAGRA Viagra values Discount pharmacies launch price war over new potency pill By The Associated Press NEW YORK — How much would you pay for potent sex? A new Kmart advertisement tells impotent men they'll pay not $10 a pill, not $9, but less than $8 for the new potency pill, Viagra. Archrival Wal-Mart says it offers a better bedroom bargain: $7.80, just 80 cents over Vi- agra's $7 wholesale price. The runaway popularity of the Pfizer impotence tablet has retailers taking the unusual step of luring consumers with low prescription prices. Kmart, a Troy, Mich.-based retailer with 1,500 in-store pharmacies, took out ads in The Wall Street Journal and USA Today this week to promote its $39.99 price for five pills, compared to about $50 at most other pharmacies. Drug makers increasingly have pitched their pills to the public, and pharmacies routinely give discounts to large managed care insurers, but it remains unusual for retailers "This is offering the best prices — it is nothing new for Kmart." Dan Jarvis Kmart spokesman to advertise the price of prescription drugs. "This is offering the best prices — it is nothing new for Kmart," Kmart spokesman Dan Jarvis said. "This is a product that's helped a lot of people. It's been very popular, almost a phenomenon, across the nation." Wal-Mart, a Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer with 2,329 pharmacies, says it has the industry's lowest price, at $38.98 for five tablets. "We have been very pleased with the way our customers have been responding to Via- gra," spokesman Bryan Holmberg said. "Our pharmaceutical associates have been very diligent, in seeing that our shelves are stocked with the product." The retail giants' prices appear to beat the widely varying prices paid by consumers. Duane Reade stores in New York charge about $10. CVS charges an average of $9.68 per pill for a five-pill bottle at its 4,100 stores in 25 states. But senior citizens get a 10 percent discount, bringing the cost to a more competitive $8.71. Prices may be higher on the black market. "I've heard some weird things, like the pills are selling up to $100 a pill in Japan and wholesale pharmacists are selling massive amounts to intermediaries who are getting them to countries where the drug is not government-approved yet," Boston University urologist Irwin Goldstein said. At any price, Viagra sales are surging. Patients picked up 906,368 new prescriptions for Viagra from April 3 through May 8, according to IMS Health, a private industry researcher based in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., that tracks drug sales at the pharmacy level. ZomxOpt 17V* 4 .84 ZweigTI 8% 4 By The Associated Press WASHINGTON — The government reported a record $124.6 billion budget surplus in April, virtually ensuring the year will finish in the black for the first time since Richard Nixon's first year in the White House. Tax revenue flooded federal coffers, much of it paid on capital gains realized from the surging stock market. As a result, the monthly surplus easily soared past the previous record $93.9 billion, set in April 1997. Budget receipts more than doubled from $117.9 billion in March to $261 billion in April, topping the April 1997 record by $32.4 billion. "Expenditures have actually been running a bit below projections. Health care costs have been lower than forecast," said econo- mist David Wyss of DRI-McGraw Hill in Lexington, Mass. "But the big thing is tax revenues are higher. Some of that is because incomes have done better than expected, but more of it is because of the stock market," he said. The Dow Jones average of industrial stocks jumped 23 percent last year, and the broader Standard & Poors 500 Index surged 31 percent. In April, when most individuals-paid taxes owed for 1997, income tax payments totaled $158.3 billion. April receipts got a one-time boost of $3.2 billion from the sale of the Elk Hills Naval Petroleum Reserve in California. With seven months of the fiscal year gone, the budget is $54.7 billion in surplus, compared with a deficit of $17.2 billion for the corresponding period of fiscal 1997.
